so which teams have a pathetic fan attendance and which teams have record sell outs. i no i can say off hand the Yankees (save for the $2,000 seats) have a pretty loyal fan base as well as the mets the redsox and the cubs. but i watch baseball tonight every night and i see like 10 people in the outfield stands @ most of the parks.

You gotta remember that were still in the season where some places are still pretty chilly, so attendance will suffer of course. A lot of those places will end up doubling in attendance by June

I hate seeing empty parks, Camden Yards and PNC more so becuse they are great parks with nobody in them. That being said, the Brewers had 30,000 in attendance on a Wednesday day game in April. :gt

If you hate empty parks man you would have hated living here in Tampa for the past 10 years! Tampa is rarely full even after being al champs. You can say we are starting off slow which scares fans off, but again the same boring point I have to make everytime: The stadiums is 40 minutes away from the general population with no mass transit and limited parking!

Winning and losing makes all the difference. If the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets were to have a couple of losing seasons you'll see lots of empty seats in those parks as well.

We got crap in Tampa for being in first at the all star break and still not having good attendence last year, so winning and losing plays a huge role, but not the only role.

The Royals usually have an empty ball park but the team was bad. I'm not sure how the renovations have helped out and now the team is actually pretty good.

Don't forget, we are in a recession. And a good chunk of the published game day attendance figures are going to be season tickets sold, whether those fans come out to the park or not.
And when money gets tight, season ticket sales are going to go down, because it is a luxury that people will part with. Add in the fact that a lot of season tickets are owned by companies and luxuries like those will be the first thing to go.
So the fact that average attendance will almost inevitably be down this year really is a no brainer given the economic situation. This isn't the 1990s.

That's true but that's only tickets sold. There are always tons of empty seats that are sold but never occupied at Dodger Stadium. MLB has a huge problem with fans and corporations buying season tickets yet only showing up to half the games...or less. The only ballparks where this isn't an epidemic problem is Wrigley Field and Fenway Park.

What bothers me is the guess the attendance thing at the end of the game. I've been to a few Dodgers weekday games this season when they say the attendance is 40,000+, but it appears that only about 25,000 showed up. The system needs to change.

Back in the day, my friends and I would often choose to watch Twins games at a bar or someone's basement because we hated watching baseball at a dome.
Since the revival of the franchise in 2001, the Twins have had excellent television ratings. More proof that most Twins fans don't want to make a trip to the dome.

I know that Fenway has been the 'flavor' of the decade, and that Wrigley is busting at the seams with yuppies for the last 25 years, and that the Yankees are in the 4 million club, and the Dodgers draw 3 million every single season........but as for day in, day out loyalty, attendance every year, and just being overall....the most loyal fans in MLB......I have to give the nod to the St Louis Cardinals, as painful as it is for thei Mets fan. Since 1982, they have had only two seasons under 2 million, and have 10 years in a row with 3million. And St Louis is a very small metro area. Those fanatics come from all over to see the Cardinals. I have been to KS,MO,AR,OK,and IA and personally have met Cardinals fans in each state, to my chagrin. Gotta give them props.

As far as Fenway goes, thats not true. A lot of times, once you get beyond the poles, there are very few people there. You Just can't tell on TV since they're in shadow. I'm not sure if the same can be said of Wrigley, but I'd suspect it.

You are kidding about Fenway, right? They avg over 37K per game :
The first one-million season was in 1946, when 1,416,944 fans attended games at Fenway Park. The first two-million season was in 1977, when 2,074,549 fans attended games at Fenway Park. The first three-million season was in 2008, when 3,048,2250 fans attended games at Fenway Park.

2006 2,957,414 vs 2,458,741
2007 2,684,395 vs 2,527,968
2008 2,501,103 vs 2,464,986

That doesn't mean that there is 37,000 in the ballpark for each game. I was at several games in the few years of the Jacobs Field sellout streak when the announced attenced attendance was 42,000+, but it was obvious that there were about 20,000 people actually inside the park.

i think the only reason fenway and wrigley fill up is because they have such limited space. if they both had 50,000 seat ballparks they would maby have about the same attendace as their current parks maby a lil higher. but it would still look empty with 20,000 empty seats. the yankees avrage atendance during the week in the summer is about 40-45k. and until 2008 the last sections in the right and left field upper deck during the week werent even sold. meanng seven tho the park looked empty they still blew away red sox and cubs attendance.

Thanks for the stats. Yes, I was going based only on what I have seen and I'll admit my comparrison is probably not fair.
I go to about 8 Sox games a year and 18 Cubs games. When I compare attendance to Wrigley, it seems like the Sox have attendance issues. Even when I go to other parks, attendence seems lower at the Cell. Granted when I go to other parks, the Cubs are usually the visiting team and they have a large fan base across the country.
The Cell has a capcity of 40,615 and Wrigley has 41,118 so it's not like the stadium capacity is that much different. I don't see many empty seats at Wrigley, where at the Cell there are multiple gaps of empty seats. Every game I go to at Wrigley, the attendance is between 38-41k. I can't say the same for the Sox. They average probably there is around 30-31k.

Very true. The Cards have a very devoted and knowledgeable fanbase if there ever was one. I'd day St. Louis undoubtedly ranks with NYC, Boston, and Chicago as the best baseball cities in the nation (not to take anything away from other cities that are great for baseball).
IMO, you'll never ever hear the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Cards, and Dodgers (except for nostalgic NYers ;)) in relocation rumors. I'd say the Angels, Orioles (thanks to OPACY), Phillies, Giants, Blue Jays (in order to keep MLB in Canada), and Astros are pretty safe from any rumors too.
(The only teams I can see possibly relocating in the next 60-70 years are the Nats, Marlins, Rays, and A's, but there will certainly be other teams mentioned in rumors. If not for PNC, the Pirates could potentially be added to that list, but I can't see them dumping that ballpark for much.)

If I had to pick, I'd say the Cardinals have the most devoted fans in baseball. The NYers seem too fickle, and lots of the Red Sox and Cubbies fans you see now are only on board because it's the cool thing to do. The Cards train 15 minutes from my house, and they come out in droves to see their team train down here, filling the Dean with red for every game.
As for my Marlins, our attendance issues are well known. It's a small-market team, but there are those of us who love them. The good thing is that the bandwagoners only come out in the playoffs, so the ones left know the game

The Cards definitely have some of the most devoted fans. I wouldn't go as far as to say NYers are too fickle though. There's a ton of fickle fans of both NY teams, but that's the nature of playing in the nation's largest city and having gigantic fanbases - obviously many people in and around NYC don't really care about baseball too much but they pay attention sometimes, especially when the team is doing good. The Cards really don't have as big of a fanbase as the Yanks or Mets as a result of that - it's just that the NY teams (and Boston as well) have tons of fickle fans on top of the die-hards (and believe me, there are tons of extremely devoted fans of both NY teams - as much as any other team in the bigs, I'd say).
It's hard to say who's the "most devoted" though. There's a ton of different measures for that, I suppose.

They should go back to turnstile count like they did in the old days. Of course there would be many 3,000 or less crowds come late september with teams out of the running. It's a shame PNC doesn't draw more, but too many here are wrapped up in Penguin fever (or have been beaten down by the 16 year streak) to come to PNC. Even the fireworks nights which used to be almost certain 25,000 aren't drawing as much. The first fireworks night this year drew 22,891. The Bucs will get 3-4 more sellouts this year, but I wish they would have more.
