JV coach is doing some work with my son on pitching. Coach told my son that his arm was ahead of his body.

With out video does anyone know what this means. I can guess but since I don't know squat about pitching how about some basic drills on timing and some suggestions.

thanks,

I've never heard of that before in my life. Maybe you could ask him for an explanation?

What part of the pitching process was the coach referring to? Could he have meant that he is throwing primarily with his arm rather than using his body rotation to pull his arm from the power position to follow through?

That was what I was assuming.

Yeah, this is probably what he means by it.

BTW, for any pitcher I suggest thecompletepitcher.com for tips and help.

I've heard pitching coachs talk about the importance of late arm action.

He may not be in sequence.

Drill,

Coaches use many different terminology ie: pulling front side, shoulder flying open too soon etc. Some video would help as other have said but based on what your saying I will assume one of two things, one that he is beginning the throwing motion before his foot plants and/or his glove side shoulder is flying open to early. You want to keep that shoulder closed for as long as possible so your throwing with your core and not just your arm. If you can get some video I am sure many of us will be happy to help you.

My son had the problem your son's JV coach was describing and I was able to fix it by number 1, watching video of what he actually does in slow motion. I was then able to see what he was doing. Many young pitchers tend to rush so I told my son to swing his pitching arm down and back keep that glove side shoulder closed for as long as possible ( foot plant ) and then bring the arm up and deliver his pitch. The pitcher is almost leaning back as he strides out from the mound with his pitching arm swinging back until foot plant he then gets into the high cocked position and delivers the pitch. I hope that was helpful good luck with your son.

The first thing that would come to my mind would be that he is not exploding/rotating his hips then letting his arm follow. I'm watching an MLB game right now, and the pitcher will lead with his hips, the the arm comes through afterwards. Maybe his arm is coming through at the same time his hips are, or even worse, before his hips (man would that look awkward). I think of a pitching motion like a whip. The release of the ball is that last and final "flick" that would sting at the end of a whip. The hips start the whipping motion, then the ball release is that final flicking part. Maybe that makes some sense :)
