Yeah, i was going to say Barry Bonds steroid usage, with a peak there when he hit 109 HRs in 2001.

Would it be pitchers' balks (with that special little spike in 1988)?

Very good! :clapping Specifically, it's balks per game (per team) in the AL from 1901 to 2008. It's never been higher than 0.07 per game, except for 1988 when it went wayyyyy up to 0.25. :crazy
