Here is an article from opening day of the Browns' 1944 A.L. championship season (St. Louis Globe-Democrat, April 18, 1944).

Read the article on this page about the writers' poll, a poll of 64 writers on how each team would finish, one to eight.
"Senators, White Sox picked to battle Yanks for Flag."
The Browns were fifth behind Cleveland but pretty well bunched in the middle with Boston and Detroit. The A's were the clear last-place favorites, though the article notes that the Browns were picked in every position, 1st to Eighth. I wonder which writer picked them first?? :reporter: Last??? :laugh
Re: the war. There was no mention of the writers' having any difficulty choosing because of the number of players absent for the war.

John Wray of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch picked the Browns to finish first, but admitted it was kind of on a lark.

I love it when someone digs up these old articles, thanks for sharing!
As a diehard Senators fan I found it amusing to see Washington picked for anything but the basement, which is where they finished with a 64-90 record. (.416 pct, 25 GB)
Additionally the White Sox finished 7th at 71-83. (.461 pct, 18 GB)
The Browns were 12-7 vs. the Senators in head-to-head competition in 1944.
