View Full Version : Nicest exteriors in MLB

The 2 new ballparks in NY got me thinking, which stadiums or ballparks have nicest exteriors?

I think the new Yankee Stadium has a gorgeous exterior, the exterior of the rotunda at Citi Field is beauitful as well, though I think they should of went with arches down both base lines.

I have to say, NYS's exterior isn't being topped. It's downright stunning. If you haven't experienced it in person, you have no idea how beautiful, imposing, and grand that exterior is.

Beyond NYS, I like Citi, Camden, Busch, Fenway, Ballpark at Arlington, and Coors the most. PNC has a nice homeplate entrance but beyond that the exterior is average. AT&T has a nice exterior too, but it doesn't quite match up with the parks I previously mentioned.

Wrigley doesn't belong in the conversation. It looks better on the inside then it does the outside.
Fenway no not really. Looks like a Warehouse.

Yankees Stadium
Citi Field
Busch Stadium
Arlington to bad it's awful on the inside
Safeco

And some other ones I can't think of right now.

I kind of like the Nationals Park exterior. Sure, it looks like an airport terminal, but I like the modern look.

Wrigley Field has nothing special going for it on the outside. And the only thing that makes it look special on the inside is the brick and ivy walls. But if I say that the Cubs need a new ballpark around here, I'm likely to get my head chopped off by a bunch of screaming purists.

Most of the new ballparks have fantastic looking exteriors. I never realized how beautiful Busch Stadium is from the outside. That's because on TV, I only see the inside.

I love the exterior of the Ballpark in Arlington. I love everything about Coors Field including the exterior, but I think Arlington beats it (exterior is about the only thing that Arlington beats Coors at). I know it's still under construction, but the plans for Target Field look great -- I think that place will be a step forward for ballpark architecture after so many "retro" parks.

New Stadia (in order): Citi Field, New Yankee, PNC, Nationals Park, Miller Park, The Ballpark in Arlington, The Great American Ballpark, AT&T, Jacobs Field, New Commiskey, Target (2010), Turner Field, Safeco, Minute Maid
Current Stadia: Wrigley, Fenway, Dodger, and Kaufman

Okay, let me clarify my comments, because I meant it as a compliment (although admittedly a little backhanded). As a Met fan, its true, I don't like the Yankees, but as a baseball fan, I DO appreciate the history of both the team and the stadium. And NYS is not "warm and cozy" the way Citi Field is, but that's not what they were going for. They were going for Majestic, and they NAILED it! It's jaw-dropping. I'm not going to compare NYS and CF because other than being buildings to play baseball in, they are completely different. Each beautiful in their own way. I'm looking foward to seeing NYS in person and I'm sure I will be blown away.

Being born at the end of the cookie cutter era, I didn't get to see many of the classic parks.

But, for ones no longer here, I have to say Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium.

For current ones, Camden Yards. Camden Yards fits in with its surrounding area, and has a timeless look, as if its been there for 50 years.

In actuality I'm not insulted, I actually like the fact that it pays homage to Ebbetts Field more or less. Plus the Rotunda is named after the most important sports figure in the last 62 years. Fact remains that Fred Wilpon is, and always has been a huge supporter of the heritage of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The bottom line is this the Mets have a beautiful new home to play in, and the Yankees have a brand new home to play in. They both are breathtaking regardless of whatever the opposing teams fans have to say about this

I had been to old Yankee Stadium twice in my life. I thought it was a nice stadium with a tremendous amount of tradition. So I pose the following question to you............how come if a Mets fan can say something nice about the Yankees home field, then why can't Yankees fans reciprocate? IMHO from the pictures of NYS I have seen it seems to be a little over the top, but then again that seems to be the way the Yankees do business. Not knocking them, just pointing out the obvious.

I like all the retro parks. Each has its own plusses.

Miller's roof looks like a giant tarantula, which adds a monolithic, stylish touch to that pretty brickwork. Arlington, Coors, and Busch would be my other favorites.

Wrigley, Rickwood, and Fenway make it simply for having survived so long. Long may those landmarks live.

Thanks for the pictures of Target. Modern, but I do like that limestone. Nationals Park, though modern outside, looks as good as Citi on the inside.

My home stadiums, Yankee and Citi, even if not as pretty on the outside as a few others, are still dear to me. I'll see my first Yankee game on 4/21. I've been to Citi twice already and, obstructed seats notwithstanding, love it.

Must mention my park track record is small - Shea, RYS, Fenway, B.O.B., Citi.

Quite some time ago, there was a back page headline "Hanky Banky" with a hilarious caricature - drawn by Ed Murawinski - of Hank Steinbrenner. So calling NYS a bank is sort of appropriate, though I'll call it the George Mahal. Citi will be the faberge egg.

NYS, hands down. Regal, awe-inspiring, breathtaking, rich and unique are only a few words to describe it. You take one look at it and you know immediately which team plays there. Some are talking about the color, but what exactly is NYS's color? With its gorgeous limestone, NYS gives off different, beautiful shades and colors depending on the weather, sun, etc. It can go from beige, to brownish, to a deep golden color.

There's promise for Target to be my # 2 favorite for it's limestone and originality. I'll have to see the finished product, but right now I can tell you it's winning me over. Like NYS, you'll be able to take one look at it and identify it with only one team. These matters count in my judging of the ballparks.

Too many of these brick and steel retro ballparks are looking too much alike, with only minor differences to separate them. But, of all the brick and steel retro parks, I'll have to go with Camden, the granddaddy of them all and the only one we can call "original" which is sort of an oxymoron considering that it's a retro.

Of the retros that followed, I'll have to go with Busch. I'd have gone with Citi if only it had two things - darker bricks and an urban setting to support it. You look at Busch some lesser designed ballparks than Citi and the darker bricks make them look richer, even if Citi is the superior design. Bad choice to go with the two-tone light colors, IMO. Also, the Citi look and design just doesn't quite fit in a parking lot/suburban setting. When the Willets project is completed, Citi might climb to # 4 or even 3 on my list. It does have more going for it than most retros. So yeah, Citi, despite all this, is on top of my list.

As for the older parks, Wrigley's exterior really does nothing for me other than that familiar Wrigley sign, but I respect it and would hate to see it go down. Fenway's exterior does look like a warehouse, but is dressed up nicely, and the banners hanging from the exterior enhance it. I have to respect it as well and its history, but given all the retros, unfortunately, Fenway is looking too familiar now and doesn't stand out in its uniqueness as it once did.

So:
1. New Yankee Stadium
2. Target
3. Camden
4. Busch
5. Citi (with potential to climb to #4 or 3b)

As for older parks the exteriors of Shibe, Forbes, Ebbets and OYS have to be 4 of my all-time favorites that come to mind.

While I'm not the biggest fan of certain aspects of NYS (split top deck, CF obstruction, too many ads), the facade is tremendous and truly sets it apart from everything else.

Here's only a few of the hundreds of different shades and colors that the incredible NYS limestone gives off.

It's cool to see some love for Shibe. The details on Shibe's facade are beautiful. The Russian-esque dome was spectacular, giving the ballpark a proper focal point unlike any of the new corporate parks.

To me, Shibe did have a few exterior flaws. The contrast between the infield facade, and exterior down the outfield foul lines was more jarring than Citi's Ebbetts style behind home plate and the "Garage Bay" sections down the line.

I also like Pelt's mention of Comiskey. The non-white era of Comiskey had a very nice vibe, and I always thought the color of the bricks were interesting.

It is not my intention to disrespect Twins fans and their new ballpark, but this new ballpark reminds me of a mix between Petco, Nationals Park, and the Staples Center.

Yep, Petco's Indian sandstone could be mistaken for T.F's Kasota limestone. Nationals Park has glass, and so does T.F., but how does it remind you of Staples Center?

The administrative section at Staples reminds me of what is going on up in Minny.

LOL didn't notice that. Well, it is an older photo during construction, so we'll excuse it this time. Even the color of the lighted blue letters is way off, it's much darker.

I know Target Fields limestone is from Minnesota. Is the Yankee Stadium limstone local? Or is it shipped in from the midwest maybe?

I seem to like the look of the YS limestone better.

True.
The outside of Wrigley Field is pretty boring at Clark & Addison.
The back of the bleachers at Waveland & Sheffield looks much better.

Actually, I should have clarified when I said I liked Shibe the best out of the classics.

I mean Shibe, prior to the additions of the upper levels, when that just looked too jarring to the eye. It didn't have much flow.

This looks better to me:

Glad to see Busch getting some love here. Sure it's a brick and steel HOK park but it fits right into the surrounding area just to the west. All of the buildings in that area are 6-8 story old warehouses with red brick the same color as the stadium. I hope that the country gets to see it showcased well in July. I'm stoked since I work down there.

Of all the post Camden retros, I give Busch the nod. Great, rich, deep colors and better attention to detail than most of the newer retros. Busch has nice clean lines and not as contrived and forced as others.

^can't wait to see the finished product it does look great

Agreed, if they pull this one off it'll be the first modern looking one that looks right.

So far, so good based on those pix, they got the rock/glass mix rocking. Hope they don't screw it all up with the stadium superstructure.

I don't care who your team is, a baseball field is a baseball field, and I like em all, just some are better than others.

I like the CF front - but doesn't the top edge look a little bare - like it just ends and needs some sort of a cap (like the lighter material just above the arches)? See the top of the Miller Park brick as an example.

Yea I think they could have done a litle more on top. Maybe instead of having it flat on the edges have a little bit of a design on top, or a crease of some type

I like
Target Field
JRR side of Citi
The west side of Safeco-- I know I'm biased and thats why only the side that faces the Pyramid Brewery (actually maybe thats the reason why I like that side.... Mmmm Beer!)
Wrigley is cool...on the inside
Busch (mmmm beer)
Cooors Field is cool (again Mmmm beer)

but the winner is AT&T. It just fit San Francisco so well. Maybe I can get the "venue naming rights fee" removed from my cell bill is I complement the AT&T structures enough.

AT&T Center in San Antonio Rules too!........................................... a mans gotta try
