This thread will hold the results of the sim for the All-Time Draft League #5. The season will be simmed one month at a time, with results and stats posted for each month. I'll give everyone a couple of days to make any changes to their lineups or pitching staffs after each month.

Individual team stats for April.

The most interesting thing to happen was that - after injuries to Pete Alexander, Pedro Martinez, and Kid Nichols - Sam's Legends were forced to start Babe Ruth at pitcher 3 times in April.

Unfortunately, he went 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 20 innings. He didn't really let that affect his hitting, though, as he's posted a batting line of .313/.430/.641 so far.

Oy, that sucks.

The league average ERA in April was 5.16, so he didn't pitch too bad. I know how you feel, though. I lost Bob Gibson for 15 days during his first start, and then the next day lost Cy Young for 10 days. Though Smoltz didn't fare too badly filling in for them - 2-1 with a league leading 1.88 ERA.

By the way- I did name my team, when I filled in the stadium and sim choice info on the roster thread. It's called the Moon Patrol.

This is cool, but I'm curious about the engine- since I wanted a strict four man rotation and Cicotte's still started four games somehow.

Sorry about that, I thought you were asking for 5 man with the 5th starter (Cicotte) skipped if possible. I'll make the change for May to a 4-main.

I hate my pitching in every DM game I'm part of. Blah.

Cool. Thanks. He's probably throwing his games (not just literally) anyhow. I assume from the team stats charts that you put in my other sim suggestions from the Roster thread- it seems so mostly.

I'm going to win 11 straight at some point in May- that's prediction #1 for the season!

Go Moon Patrol!!!

The Bees and the Wallbangers battled for 12 innings, with the Wallbangers eventually coming out on top 6-5. 'Bangers starter Ed Walsh scattered 6 hits over 8 scoreless innings while his Bees' counterpart Bob Feller struggled to keep the game close.

The Wallbangers plated 4 runs against Feller in 8 innings, but it could have been much worse if not for some clutch pitching from Mr. Feller. In the 1st he struckout Joe Jackson with runners on 1st and 3rd and two outs. In the 3rd he got Bonds and Hornsby to hit weak comebackers, stranding Honus Wagner on 3rd. In the 4th inning, he got Wagner to also ground out the pitcher with two outs and the bases loaded. And in the 8th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, he struckout Bill Dickey and George Sisler - Sisler on just three pitches.

In the bottom of the 9th, with Walsh cruising and looking for the shutout, the Bees were finally able to break through. With two outs, and a runner on first, pinch hitter Tim Raines lined a single to right to keep the Bees alive. After getting a called strike one to the Bees' SS Arky Vaughan, Walsh tried to sneak a fastball by Vaughan. Not fooled in the least, Vaughan turned on the pitch and drove it deep into the right field bleachers for a 3-run HR.

Goose Gossage entered the game to try and get the last out, but he proceeded to give up 2 basehits and a walk to load the bases. Jeff Nelson entered, and jammed Musial with a 1-0 cutter and the game looked over as he weakly bounced the ball down the first baseline. Musial, though, flying down the line with the speed that had earned him the nickname "The Donora Greyhound" in his youth, was able to just beat the throw from Sisler, allowing Berra to score the tieing run. Nelson, visibly flustered by the play, proceeded to walk Jimmy Foxx on 5 pitches to force in the go-ahead run, before getting Aaron to ground out to finally end the 9th.

But the Wallbangers still had one more chance, and Tris Speaker kept them alive by bashing an opposite-field HR off Bees' closer Roberto Hernandez. After both teams wasted scoring chances in the 10th and 11th, 'Bangers 1B George Sisler redeemed himself for failing to throw out Musial in the 9th (not to mention his strikeout with runners on 2nd & 3rd in the 8th) by hooking a 2-2 pitch around the RF foul poll for a walk-off HR with 2-outs in the bottom of the 12th. Sparky Lyle picked up the win for the Wallbangers with 3 innings of no-hit relief.

My pitching bites. However, I make up for it by having middle of the road hitting.

I'm making some lineup and sim changes for you, Wiggins, which I'll go over and edit on the team roster page. If you would be so kind as to put them in play for June, I would appreciate it.

Got 'em. The sim can't handle your request for using Brown as a closer in certain situations, though. I can make him the backup closer, but he'll be used whenever Quiz isn't available, not just in certain situations.

Mwiggins... I want to make a change for my team. I want to play Stargell some more so maybe have Greenberg playing like 25% vs RH??? whatever would make those 2 have even amount of ABs each month

Just want to see if it does something here... the platoon isn't working as well as I hoped it would...

Everything looks great... I knew my pitching is going to carry my team pretty much.

Thanks.

I guess Brown is more valuable as a starter, so maybe I should forget it. Or try it for a week or two and see how tired he gets? i don't want to make a lot of work for you though, so let's just forget it then.

Personally I think you're asking for trouble having Brown on a strict 4-man rotation plus being your backup closer. The sim is "set" in a era that's an average of the post-1955 National League, so he's not going to be able to work the number of innings he did back in the deadball era.

But I'm going to be stopping the sim and switching your lineups midway through June with Williams comes back, so if you want I can set Brown as the backup closer right now and see how he's doing at that point.

But I can tell you, in the sim, there's not much difference between Brown and Quisenberry in terms of effectiveness. Brown will give up less basehits, but Quisenberry will walk a lot less hitters and is a little less likely to give up home runs. As a reliever, Brown's only real advantage over Quisenberry is that he can pitch a lot more innings.

Yep, I'll set Greenberg to 25% vs. RH and see if that evens things out more.

I'm just hoping that Grove cools off a bit. Posting a 2.04 ERA and completing half your games against these stacked lineups is absurd. He's definitely been the hard-luck pitcher so far, with his 4-4 W/L record. His ERA was 1.48 for May, but he only went 2-2. :crazy

Thanks for going through the trouble of simulating the games, wiggins. I thoroughly enjoy this. Are you going to go through the whole season? If so, maybe we can elect all-stars and then MVP's, etc.

Yes, I'm going to do the whole season. Just doing it a month at a time to make it more interesting to follow, and to give you guys a chance to tweak your lineups if you'd like.

I've scheduled a 3 game "All-Star break" at the end of the July sim, so we can elect all-stars at that point or at the end of the season.

Schmidt, Matty, Clemens, and Bench should definitely start peforming better at some point, but Ford is a weak link in your rotation. I wouldn't expect him to turn things around, but you never know.

And you don't really have any position players overperforming to offset your disappointing stars. Bagwell was in April, but he cooled off.

Well, you can't have your cake ad eat it too, right? Quiz can shut em down as well as Miner, so let's see how it goes with him- forget Brown in relief roles for now.

Seriously- thanks for doing the sim, man. ten points to you.

June Game of the Month

With Seaver coasting into the 8th inning with a 10-2 lead, it couldn't have been going better for the hometown Bees. Until, that is, Ted Williams stepped up to the plate to lead things off in the 8th. After quickly falling behind 0-2, Williams battled to stay alive before crushing the 9th pitch of the at bat into the upper deck in right. Seaver then proceeded to load the bases before serving up a grand slam to Mark McGwire.

2 pitchers later, the Moon Patrol would load the bases again. Williams added another RBI with a bouncer to short that allowed John McGraw to score from 3rd. Mantle would follow with a 2-out 3-run shot to deep left center off Tom Burgmeier that gave Buzzaldrin the lead and capped their improbable comeback. Wood and Quisenberrys shut down the Bees over the final two innings to preserve the victory for Buzzaldrin, as boos rained down on the hometown Bees.

June Game of the Month #2

Greg Maddux faces the minimum, as he takes a perfect game into the 9th inning. Pete Rose leads off the 9th with a pinch hit single, but he's quickly erased as Paul Waner bounces into a 6-4-3 DP. He then retires Gehringer to complete the 1-hit shutout. Only 7 of the 27 batters he faced hit the ball out of the infield.

I guess i gotta make some more changes. I just can't understand why my hitting's so anemic. My pitching's worst in the league, but that makes a little more sense.

I mean, 4 of the top 7 and 6 of the top 15 career leaders in ab per hr are on my team. Three guys who hit .400. Five of my starters had career averages over .333 (three of them over .340). I got two triple crown winners, three guys who can put up a .500 OBP, 6 guys with career ops+ over 150, possibly the best hitting catcher in history, four guys who can steal 45+ bases a season, and we're struggling to hit .250.

I think I need to move into a new park next season. Our home record is abysmal.

Wiggins, I'm gonna make a few changes to my roster at the bottom of my post on the roster thread. It'll be headed "Sim options after June".

Your hitting isn't anemic. Your team is 3rd in OPS and 3rd in runs scored and 2nd in HR's. And that's with Ted Williams (the best hitter, by far, in the league so far) missing 9 games and Thomas and Big Mac being benched for much of June. And if McGwire had enough AB's to qualify, you'd have 3 of the top 7 in AB/HR this year. He'd be ranked third with 11.6 AB/HR.

And yeah, you're barely hitting .250, but that's still 3rd in the league. You're hitting pretty much the same as the rest of the league but my team, and mine is loaded with very high average guys like Hornsby, Speaker, Sisler, and Joe Jackson. Don't forget that you're facing the best pitchers who ever lived every night.

Oh, the one-hitter was against the Mudtrackers? Surprise...

Until Gehringer can get a grip, I would like Pete Rose to be starting second baseman. I'll go edit my roster on the other thread, but here's to make sure wiggins sees it.

10-4. You guys had a good month, though. 14-10, and Bagwell had another monster month. I think he hit like .350 and slugged .640 or something like that.

Yeah, good points. But McGwire had to be benched- I can't keep a .184 hitter in the lineup, no matter how many homers he hits. And Thomas isn't awhole lot better. Ah well, still a few months to go. Must keep my chin up.

Thomas should hit for a higher average, but it's only 50 some games. He's just in a slump. Mac should hit for a low average, though, against this kind of competition. But he should give you 50+ HR's most of the time. He's the highest rated player, in terms of HR power, in the sim other than Ruth.

And on average, based on how he's rated, Thomas should be one of the top 15-20 hitters in the sim (in terms of OPS or runs created, not batting average). But there's an element of randomness in the sim, so in any given season or batch of games, he can slump or get hot.

There's not a huge difference in the overall production you should expect from Mac, Thomas, Thome, and Delehanty, though. In terms of OPS, there's about a 50 pt spread between the 4 of them, with Thome being the worst and McGwire the best. With Delehanty being by far the best baserunner, and basestealer, of the four.

June Player of the Month Mickey Mantle hits a walk-off homer off of Joe Nathan in the bottom of the 13th to give the Moon Patrol the win over the first place Awesome Blossoms.

Mantle also hit a two-run homer in the 8th to tie the game up, as he provided the Moon Patrol with all their offense for the day. Blooming Prairie's bullpen wastes Greg Maddux's 7 shutout innings.

The Bees lay the hammer down on the hapless Legends pitching staff, setting a new season high for runs scored with 25. The amazing thing is that they stranded 9 runners! The Legends pitcher's surrendered 22 hits (4 of them HR's) and walked 10 hitters. You know it's a laugher when the Bees' manager sends up pitcher Joe Wood to pinch hit for Stan Musial, and then lets him play the last couple of innings in LF. Wood didn't do too badly, doubling in a run in this first at bat of the inning, and then, as the Bees batted around, he grounded out to 2nd with Yogi scoring from 3rd in the process.

Perranoski may never recover his confidence after the beatdown he received in the 8th inning...

July Player of the Month

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/columnists/jimbaumbach/blog/060427_babeRuth_hmed_9p_widec.jpg

Babe Ruth, Sam's Legends - After spending the first three months of the season not living up to his status as the first pick in the draft - and feeling the heat from the press and the Legends' fans in the process - the Babe exploded in July with a monster month. Ruth hit 15 HR's, drove in 37 runs, and posted a batting line of .367/.500/1.000, while leading the Legends to a 15-11 record.

July Pitcher of the Month

http://www.nndb.com/people/034/000085776/dizzy-dean-1.jpg

Dizzy Dean, EB Bees - Right-hander Dizzy Dean posted a perfect 3-0 record and a league best 2.90 ERA during the month of July, as he lead the Bees' to a 16-10 record (the best in the league during July).

mwiggins... I think I'm gonna change a couple things. I'll make the changes in the roster thread.

The main thing is having Eck as the main closer now. It seems like Wagner blows way too many games for an all time elite closer like him. Wagner will be backup closer now. Wagner will set up some and B.J. Ryan goes to his mop up duty with Brewer.

Also I want Stargell to have more playing time. I don't know what's the % Greenberg plays against RHP but it needs to be like 10% now and Stargell will get more ABs in LF...

I think I will change my lineup as well... DiMaggio changed against LHP I believe from 5th to 4th spot with Mize...

Also... Can Kevin Brown pitch in the bullpen as well? Since he's not starting much cuz he's getting skipped whenever possible so could he pitch a few innings in the bullpen? just curious...

Yes, Brown can pitch in the bullpen. Typically, unless he's started a game in the last 5 days, he'll get work out of the pen if you assign him to a bullpen role.

Greenberg is 25% of RHP. Once you switched him to 25% vs RH at the beginning of June, here's how they've compared in PA's.

June:
Greenberg - 60
Stargell - 59

July:
Greenberg - 49
Stargell - 59

Alright I'll have Brown pitch in the bullpen in mopup duty or backup long reliever to Foulke whenever he can...

As far as Stargell and Greenberg... I'll make them a straight platoon now. So Stargell will be vs. RHP and Greenberg vs. LHP... I need Stargell in the lineup more cuz he's hitting. Man... I'm hoping for my offense to have like one great month or to start hitting better. I'm mainly talking about Greenberg/Campanella/Banks/Mize and Pujols a little bit... I figured Campy and Banks probably not hit that well in a league like this but they're there more for their defense than offense.

Wiggins, I don't think I'm making any big changes for August-

Let's keep platooning Delahanty and A-Rod at short. Big Ed vs. righties and A-Rod vs. lefties, but let's give Thome the full time first base job for a month and see how he produces.

Also, versus lefties can you swap Mantle and Williams in the batting order so that Williams bats third and Mantle fourth?

One real change I'd like to make is to ease up some on our baserunning aggressiveness. We're caught stealing way way too often.

That's it for now.

I set your overall manager profile to "Less Frequent Stealing". But you set it to "Most Frequent", "More Frequent", "Normal", "Less Frequent" and "Least Frequent". You were on Normal before.

But you can also set that for each individual player. Collins is extremely aggressive in the game, but doesn't have a great steal success rating. In otherwords, he's going to steal you a lot of bases, but not have a great steal %. Compared to say Mantle, who won't run much, but will have a great SB%.

But it's going to be hard for any of your guys to have a lot of success stealing bases, since almost every catcher you face either has an Excellent or Very Good rated arm. (DMB rates throwing arms on EX, Vg, Average, Fair, and Poor) Bresnahan, my catcher in vs. LHP lineup has an Av arm), but that's it. Piazza's the only starting catcher with a below average arm, and he's on your team.

Yeah I'm up for voting for all stars. I don't care if we do it now or after the season.

Mwiggins, thanks for doing all this for us. Now it makes wish we actually did do the sim in the past drafts. Also, do the sim gives out like awards at the end of the season? Like Cy Young/MVP/GG/etc... just curious...

I would say let's vote on an All-Star team after the season, since there won't be an actual All-Star game. We can vote on MVP and Cy Young at that point, too.

That's fine with me. I like it at the end better anyway. It rewards the guys who played well all season long instead of a great first half. Like if we had to vote now, I think only 4 or 5 positional players on my team MAYBE could've made it (Brett/DiMaggio/Lajoie/Clemente and maybe Pujols), but most likely only Brett and DiMaggio would've made it. As far as pitching, Grove/W Johnson/R Johnson/Maddux is pretty hard to leave out and Foulke would've been my vote for RP from my team.

Johan Sanata, Mark's Wallbangers - Though the Wallbangers lost ground to the league leading Blooming Prairie in August, their young left-hander did all he could to keep them in the race. Santana went 4-1 during the month, and posted a tiny 1.80 ERA. To put that into proper context, the next best ERA in August was 3.25.

The Awesome Blossom's stake Greg Maddux to a 4-run lead in bottom of the first, pounding 2 home runs off of Kid Nichols. But Nichols was able to settle down and stymie the Blossom's for the next 6 innings, holding them scoreless while allowing only 5 hits. Meanwhile, the Legends clawed their way back - scoring 1 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th - finally tying it up in the 6th as Billy Hamilton singled Edgar Martinez in from 3rd.

In the top of the 8th, Blooming Prairie sent Maddux back out, despite his having thrown over 120 pitches. That proved to be a mistake, as Edgar Martinez greated him with a line drive past a diving George Brett. The ball got past Stargell, down into the corner, and then he overran the ball, allowing Martinez to lumber around to third base for a standup triple. As Joe Nathan hurridly warmed up in the Blossom's pen, Maddux got Cochrane to pop up. The Legends took the lead 2 pitches later as SS Robin Yount slapped a double down the RF line. That was it for Maddux, but Nathan didn't fare much better. He walked Billy Hamilton and then Jackie Robinson fought off an inside fastball and dumped it into left-center, scoring the speedy Yount from 2nd. Nathan then shut the door, but by then the Legends were up 6-4.

That was still the score when Jon Wetteland took the mound in the 9th to close out the game for the Legends. He got two quick ground outs, but then the wheels started to come off. He walked Brett on 4 pitches, and proceeded to hang a curve to Nap Lajoie, which Lajoie scorched into RF for a base hit. The ball was hit so hard that Brett was only able to advance to 2nd, but it wouldn't end up mattering as the next hitter, Albert Pujols, would deposit a 3-2 fastball into the left-field bleachers to win the game for Blooming Prairie.

Here's who look like the favorites for MVP and Cy Young awards.

Cy Young:
Lefty Grove, BP
John Smoltz, MW
Walter Johnson, BP
Mariano Rivera, EM

MVP:
Ted Williams, BA
Joe DiMaggio, BP
Barry Bonds, MW
Babe Ruth, Sam
Jeff Bagwell, EM

Grove seems a lock to win the Cy Young at this point. He's 13-9, 1st in IP, 3rd in K's, and has the best ERA in the league (by 56 pts).

Williams is having the best offensive season, but he's playing for the last place team. DiMaggio's only 10th in OPS, but he's been the best position player on the best team in the league. And he's a stellar defensive player at a prime postion, which none of the top hitters so far can claim.

I would say not. It'll probably work out that way, though.

Rivera seems like a lock as the reliever, so that's at least one for the Mudtrackers. Hornsby seems likely to be the 2nd basemen, so that's at least one for the Wallbangers. Grove's a lock, so that's at least one for the Blossom's. Williams seems to be a lock, so that's at least one for the Moon Patrol. Ruth is probably a solid bet in RF, so that's at least one for the Legends.

The Bees are the only one without a clear favorite at this point. Their best bet is Foxx at 1B, though Bagwell probably has the edge right now.

So, depending on how many people we have on our All-Star team, I'm pretty sure every team will get someone on there.

But who will our all-star team play against? How about an A team and a B team in a best of seven? The manager of the A team can be whoever wins the league, and the second place guy can manage the B team.

By the way- since my guys are out of the running for the season, I'd like to do a little DH experiment for September-

Let's have Kiner replace Frank Thomas at DH for the month to see what he can do. Thomas has been awful this season.

Let's keep Thome full time at first and McGraw full-time at third.

I'm gonna shuffle the batting orders so here are the new ones for September:

vs. right

2B Eddie Collins
3B John McGraw
LF Ted Williams
1B Jim Thome
CF Mickey Mantle
DH Ralph Kiner
RF Harry Heilman
SS Ed Delahanty
C Mike Piazza

vs. left

2B Eddie Collins
3B John McGraw
RF Harry Heilman
LF Ted Williams
C Mike Piazza
DH Ralph Kiner
CF Mickey Mantle
1B Jim Thome
SS Alex Rodriguez

No pitching changes just now.

I was assuming the all-star team would be more like an All-Pro team, not play an all-star game. But I'll sim a game if you guys want.

That's what I was thinking as well... If you wanted to do two teams, then we need to split the league in half and have their own separate teams (say like an all star team of 1st/4th/5th place team against 2nd/3rd/6th place team or something like that)... I was figuring of just having one 25 man roster all star team. Like mwiggins said, All-Pro is a better word for it.

mwiggins, just wondering if you finished the last month of the season or not yet... then we can go on to voting for All Star Team (one team) and MVP/CY awards....

after that, we can do another all time draft if people are willing to do it again.....

I'm up for it. I was thinking we could do either best year, 162 game average, or post-WWII players (including those who played a majority of their careers after WWII).

Just about. There's 4 games left in the season, and you're team trails mine by just 1 game. And we've got a four game series against each other to decide it. Sam's Legends are in 3rd, but are 14 games back, so it's down to this final series. I'll post the results game by game, to make it a little more interesting....

This is it. 4 games left, and the Awesome Blossom's trail the Wallbanger by just one game. The final series for each team is against each other, so here we go...

Blooming Prairie sends 18 game winner Walter Johnson to try and pull them into a tie, while the Wallbangers counter with Bob Gibson. Gibson has had his struggles this year, and comes in with a 12-13 record. But he's always been a big game pitcher, so the Wallbanger's fans are very confident that Gibson will be up to the task.

Turns out, their confidence was well placed. Gibson wasn't overly dominant, but he did not allow a single Blooming Prairie baserunner to cross home plate. He got all the runs he would need in the 3rd, as the Wallbangers opened the inning with 3 hits and a walk off the Big Train, capped by Hornsby's 2-run single. Gibson would make those runs stand, as he shutout the Blossom's while scattering 7 hits. Johnson was nearly as effective, other than that fateful 3rd inning.

Things did get intersting in the top of the 9th, as SS Ernie Banks came to bat with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. While many fans were wondering why closer Trevor Hoffman wasn't summoned from the pen to close things out, Gibson was allowed to pitch to one more hitter. It proved to be a mistake as he missed with a 2-2 fastball, leaving it out over the plate instead of in on Banks' hands. Banks didn't fail to take advantage of the mistake, drilling a screaming line drive into center field that looked like it was going to carry past Speaker and be at least a double. Fortunately for Gibson, and the Wallbangers' fans, getting the ball past Tris Speaker is easier said that done. Speaker, in full sprint with his back to the plate, leaped up at just the right moment and snared the liner before it could get to the wall.

Banks said later that he hadn't hit a ball that hard all year, but it was not to be for Blooming Prairie on this day. But they had 3 more chances...

Game two of the big series will be posted tonight. I simmed it this morning, and just to wet your appetite...Randy Johnson took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th for Blooming Prairie. The Wallbangers get two men on and Barry Bonds steps up to the plate as the tying run. After a long conversation on the mound, manager Joe McCarthy elected to let his big lefty pitch to Bonds. Would that decision come back to haunt him, or would the Big Unit keep Blooming Prairie's championship hopes alive for another day?

To be continued...

04-28-2009, 07:52 PM
Here we go...the Wallbangers' magic number is down to 1 and Blooming Prairie sends their big left-hander Randy Johnson (9-10, 4.81) to mound for the must win game. The Wallbangers counter with portly right-hander Cy Young (16-7, 4.22).

Both pitchers are lights-out through 7, with the Awesome Blossom's clinging to a 1-0 lead. JoeD's mammoth blast to left-center in the 5th the only thing marring the rows of zeros on the scoreboard. In the top of the 8th, Blooming Prairie gives the Big Unit some breathing room with consecutive 2-out singles by Campy and Banks, followed by a 2-run double by Brett.

That's where things stood as Johnson took the mound in the bottom of the 9th to nail down the victory and his shutout. The leadoff batter, Rickey Henderson, took him to a 3-1 count before hitting a blooper down the RF line. Turning on the jets, Rickey streamed into second standing. As Eck warmed up in the Blossom's pen, Johnson proceeded to walk Tris Speaker on 4 pitches. Wagner then lined a 3-2 pitch right at Banks for the 1st out. Though Johnson was obviously struggling, Blooming Prairie's manager decided to let him face the next Wallbangers hitter, Barry Bonds. Eck would then come in to face Hornsby whatever happened.

Bonds quickly made it clear that was a mistake, as he hooked a 2-0 fastball around the RF line for a 3-run, game tying HR. That was it for Johnson, but things wouldn't get much better as Eck took the mound. Hornsby beat out a chopper to short, but Eck was able to strikeout Joe Jackson for the 2nd out. The next hitter, slugger Mel Ott drew a walk to put the winning run into scoring position. Things would go from bad to worse as Nap Lajoie booted a routine grounder from Bresnahan to load the bases. Eck was able to send the game into extra innings by running a nasty slider in on George Sisler's hands, inducing him to pop out harmlessly to Banks.

Lajoie made up for that error in the top of the 14th with a bases loaded single, but Blooming Prairie could only get one run across the plate, as Rickey Henderson threw out the sluggish Campanella as he tried to score from second to end the inning.

Billy Wagner could not shut down the Wallbangers in the bottom of the 14th, however. After walking the leadoff hitter Rogers Hornsby, pinchrunner George Davis stole 2nd and scored on a 2-out single by Bresnahan. He advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Edmunds, but once again George Sisler failed to put the game away for the Wallbangers as he couldn't catchup with a 98 MPH Wagner 2-2 fastball.

Both bullpens would settle down after that inning, and the game would continue as a scoreless tie until the bottom of the 21st inning. Leadoff hitter Joe Jackson lined BJ Ryan's 2nd pitch of the inning into the gap in right-center for a triple. Mel Ott was up next, and after fouling off two pitches, he ground a single back up the middle through the drawn in infield to finally end the game and give the Wallbangers the title.

The Awesome Blossom's took the next two games, but the Wallbangers had already clinched the title. The Wallbangers won 17 of their first 19 games in September to take over first place, and then held on for dear life. The Legends were also smoking hot in the final month-and-a-half, reeing off winning streaks of 8 and 6 games, as well posting a 9-3 record in October.

Works for me.

Curious to all of your reflections on the season. Mine are pretty simple. I'm not actually that disappointed with my season, even finishing in the cellar, since 1) I've never sim managed before so it took me a few months to get the hang of platooning, and 2) a large part of my problems seem to be park related, i.e. we were .500 on the road but 29-50 at home (no one else was more than 2 games below .500 at home). I figure if I move into a park that fits my guys better and apply what I've learned about situational managing, we could be at least a .500 team.

Are we doing more seasons?

I'm not actually that disappointed with my season, even finishing in the cellar, since 1) I've never sim managed before so it took me a few months to get the hang of platooning, and 2) a large part of my problems seem to be park related, i.e. we were .500 on the road but 29-50 at home (no one else was more than 2 games below .500 at home). I figure if I move into a park that fits my guys better and apply what I've learned about situational managing, we could be at least a .500 team.

Are we doing more seasons?

You were like me, Buzz. It was mainly the pitching that killed you and I. I am up for another draft right now. I suggested in a previous post that we could use best season, 162 game average, or pre-WWII players as criteria. Only suggestions. I would hope that this time more people stay with the draft better.

I'm ready (dying) for ATDL #6 or another season using the same teams. With the some off-season trades. It's up to wiggins if he want to sim everything again. Thanks again, wiggins.

C- Berra (Bees)
1B- Bagwell (Mudtrackers)
2B- Hornsby (Wallbangers)
SS- Wagner (Wallbangers)
3B- Brett (Blossoms)
LF- Bonds (Wallbangers)
CF- Cobb (Bees)
RF- Ruth (Legends)
DH- Williams (Patrol)

SP- Marichal (Mudtrackers)
SP- Grove (Blossoms)
SP- W. Johnson (Blossoms)
RP- Rivera (Mudtrackers)
RP- Quisenberry (Patrol)
CP- Foulke (Blossoms)

MVP: Ruth (Legends)... that's pretty much a no-brainer there. Maybe the closest guy to him would be Bonds (since he was the best player on the first place team).

CY: Grove (Blossoms)... I kinda just went with him mainly cuz of his ERA... it's basically a four man race with Grove/W. Johnson/Smoltz/Marichal IMO. If you went with any of the other three, you wouldn't get much of an argument from me. Smoltz is interesting. He was the best pitcher on the first place team, but also had the least amount of IPs compare to the other three by a good margin. He also had like the 2nd best run support as well.

View of the sim: I thought my team did what I figured it would do in a sim. I knew I would have the best pitching staff in the league. I thought my offense would've done a little bit better, but I think it's because I had them playing at Petco Park. I wonder how much of a difference it would make if I went with a more neutral park instead of Petco Park. That might've been the only thing I would've changed. I still can't believe how poorly my team played in the last month to lose the division (after leading for the whole season).
