View Full Version : Citi Field
Just got back from Citi Field, and i must say the place is absolutely stunning. People really are not lying when the say that the pictures do it no justice.
i toke a ton of pictures so they will be up eventually, and when they are i will post the link.
one quick note, before i went into the stadium, i was walking around the outside of the park. when i got to the left field entrance, while i was taking pictures of the banners, i was interviewed by some guy from the new york post. i didnt catch his last name, but his first name was arthur i believe. now, i dont see his name under columnists on the nypost website, but he did have an official press pass that said he was from the new york post.
he interviewed me for a solid 7 minutes or so, asking me how i felt about the whole park, and i talked some history of the banners with him. i also managed to plug this website, citing it as the place that i got most of my info from.
im hoping he writes the article tommorow. he asked for my name, age, and school i go to so it seemed pretty official. it would be awesome if he writes it.
oh, and did i mention the entire park is aboslutely stunning? you really dont notice the bad ad's at all, u barely focus on them.
pics coming soon...
I read an earlier version of the AP story on the game and they had a quote from a fan saying he followed the construction of Citi online. They've updated the story now and took out the quote. I meant to post it to see if it was anyone here but I got a phone call and forgot all about it.

It looked all SNY, but some showed the game.

At one point, I was talking to my bf, and some song came BLASTING on, I said "damn, this is loud' and suddnely the volume went down a bit. It was nice to hear the ol' familiars (sweet Caroline, etc). I could honestly do without "Everybody clap your hands" this year :ooo:
haha I love steve berthiaume on baseball tonight he always says "everybody clap your hands" when jose reyes gets a hit in the highlight

I have a few issues with the stadium, but the big one is....where is the connection to the Mets history? Other than the banners in left field, I didn't see a single thing that honored the organization's past. Nothing.
I had been hoping that there would be a Mets Hall of Fame and/or museum where fans could see the 1969 and 1986 trophys and the busts of the Mets Hall of Fame members (at Shea, you had to get into the Diamond Club), but found nothing.
I'll wait until opening day to see if they'll put up posters and banners of former players (guessing that might be one of the last things they do), but the stadium I saw today seemed to dismiss and ignore Mets history.
BTW, my feelings about how the Wilpons seem to embrace Dodgers history more than Mets history was enforced when I walked into the JRR, looked towards the team shop and saw a t-shirt in the window that said "Dodger Pride." I am not making that up.

Not sure if anybody mentioned this, but on the out of town scoreboard today, it wasn't possible to tell which team was up, even though the baserunner lights were on. It looks like there are spaces for lights above and below the inning, so hopefully that won't be an issue during the season.

I just uploaded my pics from today on my site. In short its perfect. This is exactly what I wanted. People complain that red brick has been done, but I don't care. Its just works for a ballpark. So much better than white concrete and sheet metal like you see in Washington.
The best seats in the place are the last 10 or so rows of the field level in sections 108-114 and 127-121. They're close to the field, but you're a bit elevated so you get a good perspective. Too bad the "value" price is $75 for the cheapest ones. They really remind me of the better "grandstand" seats at Fenway.
The concourses seemed really crowded, but I think that was more due to the weather and people not really watching the game. I think for a normal Mets game most people will be in the seats and not up and around.
Shake Shack is right near my grad school, so I skipped it and went for Blue Smoke. Really good pulled pork sandwich. Great variety of food throughout the lower level. Hopefully some of that will be up on the Upper Deck.
I've been to most of the new parks built since Camden. Citi is right in the same class as the best of them. The Wilpons and their staff did a great job with it. $800M well spent.
Today was a terrible day for pictures. Too much fog/mist, but this was my favorite that I took:

Yea dan if you look real closely you can see the dots that will light up, don't know why they didn't have them on today but they are definitely there

A few more thoughts:
-The porch is kind of a pain to get to from the rest of the stadium, the way you have to circle around the back of it.
-It felt like home when Lazy Mary was playing.

Sound system is awesome. Huge difference from the big boom box in centerfield at Shea.

It was a confusing board, but later in the day, it was better. The At Bat lights were on and the lights for outs and baserunners started working for the Mets game when it was in the 7th inning

I imagine it's primarily because they're Spring Training games and harder to keep track of. At least I hope so.

Well, went to the game today, and have to say overall I came away impressed and somewhat proud and also extremely excited to know I will be watching my Mets with my sons there for years to come. We spent more time roaming around that actually watching the game.
My first impression on my walk over from the LIRR was "HOLY CRAP..SHEA IS NO MORE"...was very surreal even though I watched the place get taken apart on this site. I was surprised by how little left there was.
I thought the entry way to the rotunda was great and will look even better when everything is done and the trees and all flowers are in full bloom.
The rotunda was amazing, almost like walking into a museum. Very grand although was surprised to see areas still not complete. i know there is still 2 weeks before offical opening day but I would've thought this would be the one area that would be complete.
I thought the concourses were great..no more narrow corridors thru Shea.
The one drawback I have come up with comes from my seats...thats right...obstruction. Not LED boards but the stairwells and plexiglass. I know this has been brought up before but wanted to show my pictures.
We were in Section 529, row 1 and in seats 1-10. It wasn't until you got to seat 6 that the stairwell didn't cause a problem. We had 5 kids, ages 9 to 5, and not one of them could see the pitchers mound or homeplate clearly.
Here are 2 shots:
we ended up moving to 435 in left field(i think) because the kids were just not seeing anything. Although in this section from where we were, you couldn't see the left or centerfielder at all. But as far as the stairwell/plexiglass issue, it really boggles my mind that they could design a brand new ball park and have problems like this.
I will make sure when i buy tickets not to be in the first 4 rows of the promenade 500's. And i would feel awful for anyone who bought season tickets without knowing of this problem.
The other thing that was a bit annoying, was they didn't sell all the food together. Like you could get hot dogs and fries in one spot, but had to go somewhere else to get burgers and chicken. On a positive note, there were a TON of places to grab food and drink and plenty of bathrooms (i was surprised there were no dividers between the urinals, but I guess thats just something else for some drunk fans to break).
Overall I was impressed. Even the 2 other adults with me, both Yankees fans, were impressed. I'm looking forward to many games there with my family and friends, just not in those same seats.
btw, forgot to mention one other drawback to those seats and that is the foot traffic in front of you. Whether its people going to their seat, or stopping to look for their row, or the vendors that would just stop and announce what they were selling. It became very annoying.

Wasn't it supposed to by in the Adminstration Building near the bridge??? I asked a few security guards. They had no idea what I was talking about. That was very dissapointing. I've been to many of the new stadiums and most have some sort of "Hall of Fame."

My guess is they didn't do top/bottom purely because it was exhibition games - you can see that there's lights next to each score.

Big Man & I were standing at the window in the Prom Club at the start of the game-- just looking out at the field-- just speechless-- we commented on how it "almost didn't feel real"... I was looking at what I had seen so many times in pictures, it's hard to describe-- it was both "new & familiar" to me at the same time...
I am so excited to see the Mets play there on Friday! Then I know I will be "home"!!
Thanks for a great afternoon, everyone!!!
I know what you mean. After the hundreds (actually, probably thousands) of photos, it was almost surreal standing inside the stadium watching a game.
Also, it was very nice meeting you today.

Both my friend Bill & my son said the view is fantastic from them! I, on the other hand am THRILLED about the view from 416 (row 5 WC seats)-- my temporary home for the next two months!!! I think once my Dad sits in these, someone is going to be in a wheelchair every game through October!! :D

okay here are some pictures, please dont post them without my knowledge, just let me know. but anyway, enjoy them. here are some pro's and con's of the stadium.
Pro's
-seating was fantastic, i loved how you felt you were so close to the field
-pepsi porch was awesome, really great seats as well
-sound in the stadium was excellent
-views from the concourse were great
-many many concessions and stores as well as bathrooms
-many tv's to never miss action
-excellent standing room areas with tables and great views
-caesars club was awesome
Con's
-Not enough directional signage
-concourses arent as wide as i thought they were
-most of the staff didnt know how to get to places in the park like the bullpen gate
-the fact there is only one way to get to the pepsi porch
-terrible drainage, there were many many puddles i kept stepping in
-there are obstructed seats, parts of the park where you cant see parts of the field
but yea, it was a nice park. a mixture in my opinion of Citizens Bank and Nationals Stadium. it is def a fan friendly park. i couldnt help but wonder how much work has to get done. even in the rotunda as well as different parks of the concourses. enjoy the pictures!

I'm guessing there will be some place that just wasn't ready for public viewing yet. It may not be called a museum, but they definitely (I hope) need a place to display the championship trophies, Mets Hall of Famers, etc. We'll just have to wait and see.

The promenade stairways are by far and away the worst part of this park. No idea what they were thinking but I in my gut I believe that they did it to keep the concourse uninterrupted by stairways via portals. Regardless, they messed up here. Thanks to Saltzy's pics Dishy and I found out early on and had the opportunity to change our full ST locations. Unfortunately, some people will be surprised and they won't be happy.
As for the bathrooms, there were dividers between the urinals on the Caesar's level but like you mentioned not on our promenade level. Guess those with "shy balls" will have to go downstairs to pee or use the potties instead. I was also hoping for TV monitors in the bathrooms. Hope they add them some day but if not I hope that they at least pipe in Howie from the FAN feed.

BTW, as much as I hate to say it I found the Arpielle ads on the scoreboard to be just as bad, if not worse, in person. Because they're so busy I actually found them to be a distraction when i was looking at the main board. Now that I think of it, that's probably what they want considering it IS an advertisement. Oh well, guess we're stuck with this one. Chalk it up to the economy and the fact that the letters "CITI" are on top of that scoreboard.

Me and my friend occasionally stopped by the RF porch to look at Willets... It was amazing at how many people stopped to make comments. A little kid even said "That's a crap load of fenders". I thought it was funny. They better get moving, because it is a huge black eye to this place. We are in a state of the art stadium then peeking over your shoulder, you see this:

You took a picture of me!! (Red St. John's Hoody taking a bite of my cheeseburger) and my friends sitting in the Caesar's Club. Weird seeing myself in someone else's photo.
On a related note, the Caesers Club was great. I can see it being a great place to escape the sun on blistering hot days, and great place to escape the rain and enjoy a few cold ones.

It would be great to have this section open to everyone. Though I could definately see the place getting trashed pretty quickly. Already I noticed the carpet fraying where it met the hard floor.
Something tells me they are going to need to do a lot of upkeep here.

I imagine it's primarily because they're Spring Training games and harder to keep track of. At least I hope so.Yeah. ESPN.com nor MLB.com nor CBSSports.com has real time scoring for spring training games. Once the regular season starts, hopefully there'll be some way to hook the scoreboard up into real time scoring so that it updates itself.

I've uploaded my iPhone photos here - obviously not as good as the many fine people with non cell phone cameras, but I figured the more the merrier:
http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w180/schnu44/Citi%20Field/
I wish I would have met up with the rest of the crew today (especially after my 6 yr old bailed on me, forcing me to go solo) - hopefully we'll have a get together soon enough.
As for my thoughts:
The place will be amazing when they finish the last 2% of what needs to be done. I immediate thought was this was akin to moving - you may love & miss things about your old house, but as soon as you get into your new house, you see the things the new house has that the old house couldn't do.
The views from the my seats for today (section 130) and for my plan (527, row 17) are much better than comp views would have been for Shea. Its especially noticable for the field seats down the line - you actually face the action rather than crane your neck for 9 innings.
Although limited today, the food choices (though pricey) are much better than Shea - the line for Shake Shack was long (even with no shakes today), so you figure that place is going to be a gold mine for the Mets and whomever owns the Shack. I went for a pulled pork sandwich at Blue Smoke and the Belgian fries at Box Fries - both were excellent.
The rotunda was not complete yet (the mural on the RF side was just drywall), but you can tell they've spent their time to make sure it is an appropriate landmark of a special person. That, coupled with the fan walk bricks outside, makes it a really special entrance (I know I will make it a point to see my family's brick and come in the rotunda any time I can).
I didn't make it to the porch, but that looks like it would be a fun place to watch a game on a nice afternoon (although if it's 90 and sunny, you may want somewhere with some shade).
If the promanade bar is open to the public (which the people inside told me it would be during the season), that is going to be a good place to have a drink and catch an inning.
The people seemed nicer and curious to what people thought about the place - even the people who were obvious Shea holdovers seemed like they had a personality change by being in a new ballpark.
I decided to drive at the last minute and was glad - parking wasn't the nightmare I was expecting it to be. The "Southfield" parking lot (the one on the other side of Roosevelt Ave) was not even 2/3rd full (attributable to the rain). Today's $5 day was nice, but $3 more per game for parking will be a bummer for weekend games. At least the lot takes credit cards now (an attempt at humor).
Most of my negatives are nit-picky things that are most likely still in process of being finished, including:
a) the overall darkness in the field level concourse, especially behind the Ebbetts Club. Maybe it was because it was a day game, but at night there must be lights in that area.
b) Puddles everywhere (including places I didn't expect to see them, like in the middle of a ramp).
c) If reg season crowds are like today, the field level concourse in LF is going to be a nightmare to navigate - it was the one place where traffic was tight.
d) I can see why they had today's dry run - the employees are still feeling out the place themselves. I want to believe some of the things I heard (e.g. the Prom bar will be open to the public) but I guess everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt at this point.
Maybe a more significant point - is there a direct escalator ride to the Prom (400/500) deck - to get there I had to walk to two different escalators between Field/Excel then Excel/Prom levels in LF. Is that the case or did I just miss it by coming in through the rotunda? If there's no easy way to the upper deck other than walking the ramps or waiting an elevator, I think that may qualify as an oversight.

Wow, the concourse does seem extremely narrow and tight, which is surprising. That was an area that I always touted about Citi. I guess when you see photos of an empty concourse, it's misleading. Still looks attractive, though.
Are all concourses this narrow, or only some segments?

If that's LF (which it looks like to me), that was the one area that I thought was a little on the narrow side (due to the concession stand registers coming about 1/3 the way across the walkway).

I don't know if people notice, but here come the trolls adding disparaging tags. I didn't want to say anything, but it is just a bit annoying.
Dodgers Stadium East? C'mon, I don't see yellow seats and mountains in the distance.
I agree, it's uncalled for, but I think "Dodger Stadium East" is referencing Citi Field being Wilpon's homage to his Brooklyn Dodgers, not Dodger Stadium.

[QUOTE=OneEyedWonder;1476033]
Oh, <<chills running down my spine>> those pictures just gave me flashbacks! BTW, not that I could get up to my new seats (519)-- but my son ran up there so his butt could be the 1st one in them! Both my friend Bill & my son said the view is fantastic from them! I, on the other hand am THRILLED about the view from 416 (row 5 WC seats)-- my temporary home for the next two months!!! I think once my Dad sits in these, someone is going to be in a wheelchair every game through October!! :D

Now as promised, my plus points (little quirks I loved seeing):
LED Scoreboards: Balls Strikes Outs all in colored dots, not numbers. Like that.
Blue Smoke and Shake Shack...delicious.
Rotunda: Awesome. Seems too cool and too nice for a ballpark.
The bullpen view is an awesome idea...don't think I won't be checking that out during a blowout...
The ramps and staircases are tucked out of the way and while accessible, don't really take away from concourse space.
Field level concourse field view...just like Washington & Philly, so nice to have.
I know there are 10,000 less seats or so, but the park feels so much "accessible" than I would've imagined. It also helps the feeling that its enclosed and not open ended perception wise.
Sound system is great. Too loud at times, but great nonetheless.

I went to the SJU-GU game today. I liked the stadium, but as I was telling my wife, it was a bit sad for me. I just recently moved back to NY, so I had not been to a game at Shea since 2002. As we were walking from the 7 train, I wondered how many times I walked from the train (usually, the LIRR station) with my friends or through the parking lot with my dad.
As we left I told my kids that when I was a little kid, as you left the stadium you were usually met by guys selling hot pretzels 3 for a dollar from shopping carts.
During the summer, my dad usually followed up a game with a trip to the Corona ice king.
I know that few Mets fans missed the Polo Grounds, but I wonder, did Dodger fans in 1913 talk about missing Washington Park (granted, the Dodgers had previously moved out of Washington Park then moved back, as the fans did not like the new ballpark)? I guess not.
Anyway, it is a nice stadium.

Not sure if anybody mentioned this, but on the out of town scoreboard today, it wasn't possible to tell which team was up, even though the baserunner lights were on. It looks like there are spaces for lights above and below the inning, so hopefully that won't be an issue during the season.
It look to me that the lights to show which team is batting is to the right of the score

Hey, question, I don't know if anyone will know this, but are there plans to put more photos of the Mets up anywhere? Right now, the stadium is very beautiful, but it's also generic, besides for the apple by the bullpen entrance, there is nothing in the concourse that is Mets' or blue and orange- I mean even the signs for the sections were blue and red.
Besides that, the viewing angles were great, and the outside of the stadium is incredible.
Also it was really strange seeing the Mets on the out-of-town scoreboard lol
Btw, were some of the Nathans placeholders? There were SO MANY of them! like 4 or 5 on one side of one level! lol
Talking about that, in the CF area where shake shack and the whiffle ball field is, there were no tv's except for the one in the back of the scoreboard which showed a copy of the front of the board- when people are there waiting on line for food or with their kids on the ballfield, there is no way to watch the game... I really hope there are plans to put new tv's up....

Never understood the Sox fan's fascination with that song, considering that Neil Diamond is a native New Yorker, and I believe a Mets fan and it has nothing to do with baseball or the Sox. Then again, most Sox fans are too drunk to know what they're listening to anyway.

I'm not going to make any comparisons until there is an actual game in NYS- it's not fair to compare a pristine NYS that was completely empty to a filled Citi Field. I will save any comparisons until Friday.
Good call. That's what I meant anyway; after you've taken in a game at NYS.
I'll do likewise once I see a game at both.

It wasn't really THAT narrow. It just kind of creates an illusion with the insanely high ceiling.
That particular area, under the LF landing, is narrow though, and the placement of the cash registers make it even tighter.

Red or Dark Orange. You be the judge:
Definitely orange, no ifs, ands or buts. Only the 516 (not the 515/516) sign comes dangerously close to red, though I'm sure that had to do with the lighting in the photo.

My guess would be they just haven't finished that particular aspect of the park. I doubt they're going to leave it divider-less.

Red or Dark Orange. You be the judge:
Either way, the Mets are coming from a stadium that was as bright colored as you could possibly get- the royal blue and bright orange.. and yes, I know they want to lose that image, however, that is still part of their heritage and I associate those bright colors with the Mets, and I don't think it's right to go completely in the other direction.
And trust me, I'm not trashing the place and being a "troll" or anything, there's a lot in the stadium that I loved... I'm just trying to point out the little things that I noticed being as unbiased as I possibly can.

High ticket prices????? Today was a soft-open at $5/ticket (someone else put it perfectly calling it a self-guided tour at $5 a pop). They didn't even charge full price for parking.
The reason to do it was to ensure they had the ability to work out the kinks.
As for my food, everything I had was appropriately hot/cold.
What kind of expectations did these people have for today? Yikes!

A few random thoughts. I'm sure I'll think of more later:
1) They didn't let me bring a sealed Poland Spring bottle in. BS. And when I asked the security person whether or not I could fill up a plastic thermos/water bottle and bring that in, she said she didn't know.
2) I like the "World's Fare" area with Mama's of Corona, the sushi place, etc, but they need to come up with a better way of placing the cash registers, because anybody could just walk out of there with food. Also, they should have some signs on the outside so we know what's inside.
3) Box Frites was good (though I wasn't crazy about the dipping sauce I got). My friend tried El Verano Taqueria, or whatever the Mexican place is called. He said it was really good.
4) The scoreboard is plenty big, and with the linescore at the bottom, the image above is widescreen.
I dont understand why so many people whine about the mets not letting people take in bottles with caps. Its really very simple, if you have a cap on a bottle, it is easy to throw it & make it a projectile. Without the cap, its harder to throw because the liquid will spill out. It is merely a safety issue. Come on people, bring 20 or 40 bucks to the ballpark & buy a drink. Dont be such a cheapskate.

Cheapskate??? Give me a break. Why should I pay $4 for a bottle of water every time I come to the ballpark when I can buy a case of 24 for $4 at the supermarket? For one game it's not a big deal, but if you go to lots of games, it's a big issue.

It's perfectly acceptable for them to remove the caps, people can drop a full bottle of soda/water from the upper deck and seriously hurt someone. If the caps are off all the liquid would fall out so it would be useless. It's all about safety guys, don't see why that is hard to understand.

Today was a great experience for me.
For me personally it was very emotional. My mother passed away this offseason, and the Mets were her life. We had an idea that she wouldn't make it to this day, and because of that for he last birthday I bought her a brick dedicated to her for the Citifield fanwalk. I have never seen anybody happier than she was when I gave that to her. The first thing I did today was drive up and park my car quickly, then I dashed to the Rotunda to see my mother's brick. It was a very sad experience for me and my father, but we got that out of the way and went into the ballpark.
Walking around the ballpark was absolutely incredible. Its so hard to describe to somebody who wasn't there how great it is. The vibe there today was so weird, as I was looking around at the other people and everybody had the same amazed look on their faces as did I. I guess we as a fanbase are just so used to being in a dump, that this is a real SHOCK to our system.
I can't wait for the added vibe of actually having a METS game to watch. I really think it will be the last piece of the puzzle for one of the great ballparks in baseball.

We talked to one of the ushers that came over from Shea for a bit today. They are no longer allowed to wipe seats - and more importantly to them - take tips. This was an edict from Mets management. Anyone caught doing either is subject to suspension. Why aren't they allowed to wipe down seats? That's an odd one.
Part of me can understand the tip thing only because I've witnessed enough ushers over the years at Shea who would wipe off seats and than stand in your way as if to say, "here is where you tip me". They weren't all like that of course. We also know that many ushers made decent money getting people into better seats. Frankly, I have no problem with that since the seats were always vacant anyway. They provided a service to those willing to pay for it.

Why can't they wipe seats?
I can see the reason being they want all ushers to be at the top of the aisles and checking tickets. They don't want people jumping into the better seats while an usher is off wiping a seat... if you want to buy a promenade seat and try to sneak into the empty expensive seats on the field level you have another thing coming.

I was at Citi Field today like many others here were. Overall I was impressed. The first thing I noticed getting off the 7 was how grand Citi Field looked. I can only imagine how much better it will be once the parking lot and landscaping and everything else is also 100% completed.
I also like the exposed steel/iron architecture. There definitely was a noticeable 'Old New York' theme if you simply looked around. Arches, steel beams, and exposed rivets were everywhere it was a really nice touch. I scratch my head at people who say Citi has no defining character or traits... I found it very old school and charming. Compared to Shea everything is definitely closer, more intimate, and an overall warmer atmosphere with the way everything is set up. Overall I loved it but there were a few drawbacks.
Here are what I found to be some of the negative things in this otherwise awesome ballpark.
- The infamous LED boards:
I know by now people hate to hear anything more about this subject... but I couldn't go to Citi without investigating first hand just how bad it really was or wasn't. Unfortunately, it wasn't good. I'm around 5'8", obviously not a giant, but that hardly constitutes me as a midget either. In person I'm just an average sized guy. When I sat in those seats I could see all of the infield diamond if I leaned forward or sat in an upright position. This wasn't uncomfortable... but the average guy doesn't want to always lean forward or sit upright with a completely straight back... at least not for 3 hours straight. So I leaned back in my chair and sat in my usual 'relaxed' position, like any guy normally does, and in that position I could not see home plate or 1st base from where I was. The boards just blocked it out. This also applied to the seats in the outfield but instead of blocking out the diamond, the boards blocked out most of the outfield from right below me. One of the St. John's players hit a deep fly ball and as the ball approached the outfield the only way I could see the Georgetown player make the catch was to stand up and actually look 'over' the boards that were obstructing my view.
- Plexiglass staircase obstruction
I tested out a few seats with the glass obstruction and unfortunately it is what it is. Especially in damp weather when it may have drizzled or rained a little, the condensation builds up and there's water drops on the glass. It definitely gets in the way.
- Puddles galore
There were drainage holes throughout the entire stadium, but just not in the right places. The bridge from the Pepsi Porch had a huuuge puddle that had absolutely nowhere to go. As people were walking across that bridge, a Citi Field worker was trying to sweep all the water away with a broom... it was that bad. People had to actually walk around it. I also checked out the field level seats in the 1st row and there were huge puddles of standing water where people's feet would be if they were sitting in those seats.
- Seclusion of the Pepsi Porch
The Pepsi Porch is great. It seems like the place to have fun crowds, and there's plenty of standing room if you want to stretch your legs. The only problem with it is that there's only one way to get to it, and it can be quite a hassle to get in and out of there. The food vendors in the Porch were only selling pretzels and drinks, so just to get ANY food, I had to walk all the way back across that bridge and into the other sections of the ballpark. It wasn't convenient at all. All I can say for now is... whenever those vendors in the Porch are fully operational, they better have some REALLY good food because getting out of that area to get food elsewhere is kind of a hassle.
So, those are the negatives I have of this otherwise great, great ballpark. Sorry for such a lengthy post but I just wanted to explain everything to the best of my experience. The only one negative that bothers me a lot are those LED obstructions. They should be lowered by about 2 feet for 2010. I can deal with everything else.
All in all it was a great experience and I came out pleased overall with this ballpark. Honestly I can't wait to go back and this time root for the Mets!

Don't believe the other story??
Ok, I actually hurt my knee initially in High School doing a full twisting dismount off the balance beam. I did gymnastics for 12 years and was quite competitive. My lower body landed short and my upper body kept twisting & boom-- snapped my ACL-- It's been many years & 7 knee surgeries & 1 hip surgery since then. I finally have a doctor (#3) (in the UCONN medical group-- basketball team trainer-- actually traveling with the men in the NCAA tourney) He was the one who diagnosed the misalignment in my tibia-- the reason none of the ACL implants ever took-- meanwhile-- doctor #2 removed my meniscus 2 years ago rather than repair it-- so new doctor did an ACL revision, a medial meniscal transplant & a high tibial ostoctomy (basically broke my tibia & inserted a plate in it to realign it). He is confident that this will be my last surgery-- I am 100% non-weight bearing for 10-12 weeks-- It's been a tough recovery but there was nothing that would make me miss today!!! The Percocets helped, too! :D
Sorry you asked? You should have let me just stick to the kicking a Yankee fan's ass story!!
I found it funny how the LIRR is calling it "Mets-Willets Point formerly Shea Stadium". Everything is still "Shea Stadium".
Good. I don't like the new place not being named Shea. Unless they rename Flushing Meadow Park or something else suitable after him I'll call the new stadium Shea.
Just curious if anyone went to who had been at Ebbetts Field and if there is a comparison.

Cheapskate??? Give me a break. Why should I pay $4 for a bottle of water every time I come to the ballpark when I can buy a case of 24 for $4 at the supermarket? For one game it's not a big deal, but if you go to lots of games, it's a big issue.
If you have money to throw around and you'd like to buy me a drink each game I go to, I'm more than willing to accept.
I agree. Paying that much for water is where I draw the line. And if they make you take the caps like at Giants Stadium, we alwaysl come equipped with extra caps (contraband?).
And you can fill a bottle with any fluid ,and stuff anything like a napkin in it and use it as a weapon so taking the cap does nothing. Ever hear of a Molotav Cocktail ? There's no cap on it.:D

Nice story Metsfan-- thanks for sharing--I'm sure your Mom was watching and loving every minute of your and your Dad's enjoyment today.

I only go to the Yankees stadium in Bronx not to look at the man play baseball games but to see the Cotton Eye Joey. If they do not do the Cotton Eye Joey at JOEL OSTEEN HISTORIC NIGHT OF HOPE on 25 of April then I will cry and make Diva tantrum (scene) and I will also be inconsolable.
Maybe this is why no-one wants to go to games with me?

i know where my seat is, so i dont usually need there help, but if they wipe the seat i would thrown them a couple of bucks.
being a sth, my usher was always there, he would see me coming (hard to miss) and he would wipe the seat. didnt tip him all the time, but at the end of the season a gave him a nice little tip.
im okay with them taking away that option. dont the yankees do it this way?

We talked to one of the ushers that came over from Shea for a bit today. They are no longer allowed to wipe seats - and more importantly to them - take tips. This was an edict from Mets management. Anyone caught doing either is subject to suspension. In lieu of the ability to take tips, their union negiotiated a 5 year contract - as opposed to the 2 or 3 year contracts that they have typically been given. This particular usher was not pleased.
mgmt: we dont want you to take tips
union: okay so we wont do anything that got us tips in the past
mgmt: fine by us.
union: okay then.

One thing I was disappointed about was, in the Mets store, they had jersey shirts for past players. They had Carter, Seaver, Gooden, and Strawberry. I was surprised they had Carter. I was very disappointed there was no jersey shirt for Keith Hernandez. You'd think they'd definitely have he's a color commentator and just as popular as Carter, Gooden, and Strawberry.

You can see Camera Shots at many of the concession stands with exact prices, someone else can dig them up. But from the Newsday article I read, the Mets mentioned that on average, that concession prices are 6.5% lower then last season at Shea.

Guy who did the falling was really drunk. He was standing up and arguing with the people behind him the lost his balance and fell backwards. His buddy (who I remember had a rutgers hat on) slinked away before security got there.

Kinda sad that today is over. What a blast exploring a new place. I'm looking forward to more on Friday.
I have to be honest and say that I was not blow away, but I wasn't bitterly disappointed either. Perhaps it was sitting in my plan seats and realizing that after 45 years of sitting between the bases, that I am way in the OF now and very far away from the main action. Plus A huge chunk of RF is cut off.
But I'm glad you all seem to love the place, because especially for you younger folk, this place will belong to you the way Shea belonged to me and my generation.
No matter how anyone feels, this is going to be the ballpark of the league champion. That alone will take a lot of the generic nature of the place away, give it national recognition and stamp it solidly with the title of Our Ballpark

What a great day this was. I'm so exhausted. It looks like despite minor shortcomings, this place is great. It will take a couple of times before we can get used to calling it home. It really is night and day compared to Shea. It was surreal to experience this place on a cold March day with a small capacity while featuring a game no one really cared about. Add to that the place isn't 100 percent finished. But I think we went from serving the worst food to one of the best. It takes the deli theme NY is famous for and added it to the park. not many other venues can do that. Taste Of The City is awesome. Didn't get a shack burger this time around, but plan to this weekend. There seem to be a million stores. It's going to be pretty tempting to burn all your money at these shops. Nothing new to really add. Glad to see bf people met up. Too bad i missed it. we should all post pictures of our ticket plan seats. ill post my pics tomorrow. this was a very successful run.
