I was hoping that someone here could help.
Is there any reason why the Mets would have suspended a game at the end of the eighth inning with a 4-0 lead?
The reason I ask is that I distinctly remember going to a game in '79 and seeing a half inning of play (the top of the ninth) before the beginning of the actual game I was attending.

This game actually ended 3 times. Leonard flied out to center to end game and Mets left field. However, shortstop Taveras had asked for time before
the pitch to Leonard and it was granted by 3b umpire Harvey. The
Mets were called back on the field and Leonard singled to
center. However, manager Torre of the Mets noted that first
baseman Kranepool was not on the field and argued that the game
could not properly resume without 9 defenders on the field. The
umpires agreed and brought Leonard back to bat. Houston manager
Virdon argued that the count on Leonard should revert to 0-0 and
erase the pitches thrown while Kranepool was absent. The umpires
ruled that the pitches would count. Virdon formally protested
the game. Leonard then flied out to left to apparently end the
game a second time. NL President Feeney was at the game and one
hour later upheld the Houston protest, saying that Leonard's
single was legal. The game was resumed the next evening with
Leonard on first with his single and a new pitcher for the Mets.
He faced one batter and the game was finally ended;

Reading stuff like this makes you appreciate how many games have been played. Eventually some crazy stuff will happen. I remember having that feeling while watching the Griffeys (father and son) hit back to back HRs. Couldn't help but just think, "Wow! Truly amazing." That's why you've got to love sports.

You're welcome. I'm not a genius though...I just knew that retrosheet has a list of suspended games. http://retrosheet.org/suspend.htm
