View Full Version : MLB division rankings based on ballparks

How would you rate all six divisions based on your combined pros and cons of the respective ballparks? For me it is -
1) NL Central (Wrigley, PNC, Miller, GABP, Busch, Minute Maid). Wrigley and PNC put it over the top for me. A lot of great baseball towns and a lot of great baseball fans in the ballparks here.
2) NL West (AT & T, Dodger, Coors, Petco, Chase). Good case for #1 with those first 3.
3) AL East (Fenway, Camden, New Yankee, Trop, Rogers). Trop and Rogers bring it down. But I like the mix of stadium types and ages in this division. Fenway offsets the negatives of Trop and Rogers enough for me.
4) AL Central (Kauffman, Progressive, Comerica, US Cell, Metrodome). Obviously the Dome brings it down for one more year.
5) NL East (Citi, Citizens, Turner, Nats Park, Dolphin). Citi is going to be awesome, Citizens is great.
6) AL West (Safeco, Angel, Ballpark at Arlington, Oakland Coliseum). I used to really like Oak. Coliseum, but Mt. Davis ruined it. Safeco looks awesome.
- After Target Field opens, my rankings would be adjusted to put the AL Central #3.
- Parks that I have personally been too include the Metrodome, AT & T, Wrigley, Kauffman, Miller and Minute Maid.

With NYS, Fenway, Camden (in that order), the AL East easily takes the prize, IMO.
Good thread. I'll add the rest of my rankings later.

Wow how predictable. Yankee fans elevating whatever the Yankees are involved in to the top of the list.
For the purposes of this they will say how great Fenway is, just so the Yankees are at the top. But, for all other conversations Fenway will be attacked for whatever they perceive as a shortcoming.

Camden is one of the best parks I've ever been to. Couple that with classic fenway and a new modern yankee stadium and thats tough to beat. Once the Rays new stadium goes up they'll definitely be in a class of their own. Rogers Centre is awful though

My order is based on which is probably the best facility to watch a game and services. Sure if you're talking about nostalgia purposes/history you go Fenway.

That won't be for quite some time. I'm talking years here. No one is getting a new stadium in this economy.
The Twins Yankees Mets and Giants/Jets were lucky to get the shovel in the ground before this mess of an economy started.

And you have seen how many games at New Yankee Stadium?
In all fairness to 80Shock, Fenway, which deserves respect and accolades for its place in baseball history, is a terrible, cramped, obstruction-filled park to watch a game in (columns galore), with tight, infield seats that are angled toward the outfield on the 1st and 3B sides. So, even though no one has yet attended a game at NYS, it's safe to say that it'll be a better place to watch a game.
(I'm not trashing Fenway, just giving my impressions of watching a game there).

And how many games has anyone seen at CitiField? But it sure it up there high on some of the other posters list. I don't see you questioning that.
My list of AL EAST parks is based on the modernized ones if you noticed. (Except the Trop that is just an awful park) It's not like I said: NYS Fenway etc....

Well, if I made a list, I would be sure to add an asterisk or note it as "not seen yet" If I could get the experience of ballparks just by pictures, I would have visited all 30 stadiums, and it would be a much cheaper alternative.

Okay! but perhaps you take this up to the person who started the thread. Good idea to start a topic on rankings of ballparks but there are some new parks so we can only go by pictures.
I didn't start the topic, I'm only responding.

As a homer, I'd love to put the NL Central at #1, but the GABP is terrible, and I've heard nothing but bad things about Miller Park. Also, SkyDome/Rogers and the Trop drag down the AL East. You can't have 2 out of 5 ballparks in a division be terrible - I don't care how great the 3 others are... Bottem line, the NL West has the best "retro" ballpark in MLB, a classic that has aged better than the other two, and two real solid parks. Each other division has a clunker, and the former BOB is better than the some of the others (it's no Trop, or Metrodome).
Moose
edit - oh, and CruizinSD; you're out of your mind putting GABP ahead of Wrigley (let alone MM or Busch, or even Miller), especially if you've never been there. Look up the GABP thread here, that ballpark is a disaster...

This might not be the thread to say this, but when I went to Citizens Bank Park I wasn't impressed at all. The interior is pretty nice but the exterior isn't very attractive at all. Everybody enters on the first base side since there is a huge warehouse behind home plate. There is absolutely no facade as there is only exposed reddish steel that looks like it's rusted. My rankings for the NL East would be:
1. Citi Field
2. Nationals Park
3. Citizens Bank Park
4. Turner Field
5. Dolphins Stadium

NL WEST
1. PETCO Park
2. AT&T Park - other than PNC, AT&T and Petco are my favorites of the new parks. Its hard to pick between the two but i'm currently preferring Petco (it changes based on the last one i have visited)
3. Dodger Stadium - a timeless classic
4. Coors Field - good place to see a game with plenty of real estate
5. Chase Field - indoor baseball
NL CENTRAL
1. Wrigley Field - one of the two living old age gems
2. PNC Park - my favorite of the new parks
3. Busch Stadium
4. Minute Maid Park - best of the indoor parks
5. Miller Park
6. Great American Ballpark - my home park, but sadly one of the lowest rated of the new parks
AL EAST
1. Fenway Park - not only the best ballpark but the best place i have ever been on Earth. The crown jewel single handedly moves the AL East up to #3 spot.
2. Camden Yards - still a gem as the first of the so called "retro" parks
3. Yankee Stadium - for 1.5 billion, it leaves a little lacking for me, especially the fences are too short and prices are too high
4. SkyDome - first retractable gets some credit
5. Tropicana Field - worst of the current MLB stadiums, even with the renovations
AL CENTRAL
1. Kauffman Stadium - great place got even better with the renovations
2. Jacobs Field - ive always loved the Jake, thats right, "The Jake"
3. Comerica Park - like the roomy playing dimensions
4. U.S. Cellular Field - worst of the new parks
5. Metrodome - indoor baseball
NL EAST
1. Citizens Bank Park - very nice new park - moving the fences back helped a little
2. Citi Field - think it is better than new yankee stadium
3. Nationals Park
4. Turner Field
5. Dolphins Stadium - its a football stadium

You consider something built in 1991 'new'?
gman5431
04-22-2009, 01:41 PM
Yes. I seperate the parks out between the old and new parks. The old ones = the classics which there obviously arent many left. The new parks are everything else and US Cell fits into that. It just missed the retro phase but its out of the same era more or less. I would consider it the worst of the post 1980 parks.

While i do have Camden above NYS - which i think isnt all that great (especially considering it cost 1.5 billion) - i have it below AT&T Park. Despite having one of the worst names, it has one of the best views. As mentioned in my ranking, I flip flop between Petco and AT&T as the #2 of the new parks, behind PNC.

I've only been to around 10 parks, but I rank it ahead of Chase Field and Minute Maid.
I went to Comisky (US Cell) in 99 and then again in 2005, their WS year. As with any ballpark, once inside its a great place to see a game. I prefer the fans at ChiSox games over the Cubs fans. But unfortunately they didnt come close to the old place. The renovations were greatly needed and did improve the place a bit, ill give them that. Someone has to be last and IMO, US Cell is that.
However, while i have Chase and MM above US Cell, i can respect that ranking because no one hates indoor baseball more than I. I have been lucky enough to be in each of those two when the roof was open, so i may be a little biased.

NL WEST
AT&T Park
PETCO Park
Doger Stadium
Chase Field
Coors Field
~West is probably the most consistent division. At&t, Petco, and Doger are some of my favorites, while I still love Chase and Coors
NL CENTRAL
1. Wrigley Field
2. PNC Park
3. Miller Park
4. Busch Stadium
5. Minute Maid Park
6. Great American Ballpark (Games)
~Wrigley's a classic, PNC is BEATIFUL, Miller has great architecture, Busch and and Minute Maid are still good to me. Central is pretty nice, nevermind GABP
NL EAST
1. Citizens Bank Park (Hard to say as a Mets fan, may have my mind changed when I go. CBP IS Nice.)
2. Citi Field
3.Nationals Park
4. Turner Field
5. Dolphin Stadium
~To pick CBP is tough, but it's a beautiful ballpark. Nats Park is only ok to me, never like Turner, and Dolphin is not a ballpark at all. (:P)
AL WEST
1.Safeco Field
2.Angel Stadium
3.The Coliseum
4. Ballpark in Arlington
~Unfortunately, not a lot of knowledge on the West
AL Central
1.Progressive Field
2.Comerica Park
3. US Cellular Field
4.Kauffman Stadium
5. Metrodome
~Love Kauffman's renovations, but the Top 4 is great in the Central
AL Central
1. Camden Yards
2. Fenway Park
3. New Yankee Stadium
4. Rogers Centre
5. Tropicana Field (If the new park plan goes through, easily a favorite, love the idea)
~Bunch of classics (3), one meh one, and one I can't stand.

Gotcha. Very fair reasons.
They didn't come close to the old place, and I really doubt they wanted to, other than the arches on the outside. It's too bad really. I was so hopefull with PNC that the new trend would be ballparks with 2 decks and less height, but PNC has been the only one. I think if a new Comiskey were built today, they would try to mimic old Comiskey more and possibly build a park with 2 decks with all the amenities.
I was at MM and Chase when the roofs were closed. I was not a fan.

I'd put the Cell above places like Miller, the GAB (the 3B side at least), Turner, and even NYS.

I'll probably revise this list at the end of the month:
AL EAST
1. BALTIMORE - Perhaps my favorite place to go whenever I get the chance.
2. BOSTON - A close second. Had a blast up there. Would love to do again.
3. NEW YORK - Too corporate, but concourses are bigger. I probably prefer RYS over NYS.
4. TORONTO - Love the view of CN Tower; reminds me of a cookie-cutter.
5. TAMPA BAY - haven't been there - Looks dark and catwalks obstruct play. The proposed stadium looked great; hopefully they'll get a new stadium.
AL CENTRAL
1. CLEVELAND - It's really not a bad place. Reminds me of CBP.
2. DETROIT - Like Cleveland, not a bad place either despite leaving Tiger Stadium.
3. KANSAS CITY - haven't been there -Going this summer. Love the waterfalls.
4. CHICAGO - haven't been there - Going this summer. Better than Old Comiskey Park by far.
5. MINNESOTA - haven't been there - Target Field will be a big improvement once finished.
AL WEST
1. SEATTLE - A beautiful park in a beautiful city.
2. LOS ANGELES - haven't been there - Would like to see the big A closer to the stadium as it once was.
3. TEXAS - haven't been there - Wonder how it would be like with a dome. Looks out of place in the suburbs.
4. OAKLAND - haven't been there - Time for a new stadium
NL EAST
1. PHILADELPHIA - My hometown, perhaps I'm partial here. CBP is one of my homes away from home. A great place to watch a ballgame.
2. NEW YORK - Did a nice job with this place. Very impressed.
3. WASHINGTON - A sleeper. Improved camera angles viewing at home. Good food as well.
4. ATLANTA - Impressed with how clean it is. Great place to bring kids, but possibly a bit too cartoonish. Not like that's a bad thing anyway.
5. FLORIDA - haven't been there for a Marlins game, only for a Dolphins game. Built for football only. Can't wait until the new stadium is finished in 2012.
NL CENTRAL
1. PITTSBURGH - The best from what I've seen. A beautiful place indeed.
2. CHICAGO - haven't been there - Going this summer - A legendary ballpark and a place that you must go before you die.
3. ST. LOUIS - haven't been there - Going this summer - Looks nicer than Busch II. What's going on with the Ballpark Village?
4. MILWAUKEE - haven't been there - Going this summer - I hear it's pretty nice up there. Sausage races and Bernie's slide will provide entertainment.
5. HOUSTON - haven't been there - Tal's Hill in CF has got to be the worst gimmick in baseball.
6. CINCINNATI - Has the best hot dogs in baseball, and some things do stand out, but that gap I will never understand and the sight lines aren't great either.
NL WEST
1. SAN FRANCISCO - haven't been there - Hope to see a splash home run once I get out there
2. LOS ANGELES - haven't been there - I would put this park as a "must-see."
3. SAN DIEGO - haven't been there - Looks like a nice place to watch a game from tv.
4. COLORADO - haven't been there - I hear there's a nice view of the mountains. Need to sit along the first base line.
5. ARIZONA - haven't been there - Hope to step foot in the swimming pool
