When i was a kidd under ten, my parents, in a plot to decrease the
surplus population by one, allowed me to walk to yankee stadium - an 8 mile round trip. Ie home to george wash bridge 1mi;accros bridge 1mi; bridge to stadium 2mi thru bronx/harlem.
Armed with a buck gave me a$.60 bleacher ticketand $.40 for food.all you could get with $.40 was candy. After game we'd wait at club house door for players leaving the park. The guys we met this way included: Yankee clipper;scooter; snuffy;hammerin hank;ole reliable;king kong;the
chief; el toro the bull;smokin joe;yogi; moose; and cro! Can you name these nicknamed yankees? Please respond. Yor prize will be
membership to my exclusive yankee franatic club.
One day mom gave us an extra $5.00. That time we returned via broadway/bronx and ate dinner at "broadway speghetti house i'm
going back some day to stiff another waiter with no tip

Cute story. How long ago was this? Sounds like many years ago, given the names you'd mentioned.

Re the players you'd mentioned, most of the nicknames can be found at this link (http://www.baseball-reference.com/):

Yankee Clipper = Joe DiMaggio
Scooter = Phil Rizzuto
Snuffy = George Henry Stirnweiss

Hammerin' Hank = Henry "Hank" Aaron or Henry "Hank" Greenberg, neither of whom were Yankees.

The Clutch or Old Reliable = Tommy Henrich
King Kong = Charlie Keller (I almost thought it was ex-Met David Kingman)

I'm unsure who "The Chief" was.

The Bull = George Uhle? Possibly, since he was one of several players with that nickname, but I thought it was another guy from the '70s, whose name I can't remember.

The only "Smokin' Joe" I can think of is the famous heavyweight champion boxer, Joe Frazier.

Yogi was obviously Lawrence Peter Berra
Moose = Bill Skowron, or recently, Mike Mussina

I'm not too sure who Cro was.

Bob.....I also used to walk to the stadium....but I was on the NY side of the GW so I did not have to walk as far as you! However, as a teenager I worked at the gas station on the Palisades Pkwy and used to walk across the bridge the other way. Much better walking to see the Yankees play than walking to work:)

Joe Page was also nicknamed the 'Fireman'. I wonder if that is where calling closers 'fireman' came from.

Hi John....no I don't have any of the original Stadium but I will ask some family members. I do have some around here somewhere of inside the Stadium from after the renovation. From around 1976-78. They are shots of the field during a game.

If you have those pictures, please post them into a new thread here. Many thanks in advance. :)
