What are the requirements for a no-hitter to count?

"An official no-hit game occurs when a pitcher (or pitchers) allows no hits during the entire course of a game, which consists of at least nine innings."

The pitcher(s) has to allow a baserunner, because if he doesn't then it's a perfect game?

I will tell you the answer, he has to win the game. Andy Hawkins in 1990, Matt Young in 1992, and a pitcher last year during the LAA-LAD series all had no hitters but lost the game so Elias did not count the no-hitter. Elias rules are very strict, they tried to revoke Randy Johnson's 20 strikeout game because the game went into extra's and the small detail that the pitcher can't exceed 9 innings for the record to count but they made an exception after it was learned that Arizona used a relief pitcher in the 10th

I don't think that's right. I think Hawkins and Young lost their no-hitters because they didn't pitch 9 innings. I don't think winning is a requirement.

Hawkins, Young, and the Angels were all visiting teams so they didn't pitch the bottom of the ninth which is why their no-hitters didn't count.

I believe there are two official no-hitters where the team didn't win. Ken Johnson of the Braves did it in 1964 and Stu Miller and Steve Barber of the Orioles did it in 1968 (I think).

I remember back in 1992, Baseball Tonight made a big deal about Young being denied the no-hitter by Vincent and Elias because the Red Sox lost to the Indians 2-1 (Young was throwing a lot of walks that day along with wild pitches and both runners scoring from third on ground outs) and Steinbrenner threw a hissy fit when Hawkins was denied the no-hitter during the Yankees year of Heck (1990) when they were in last and the great one was given a lifetime suspension for hiring a stalker on Dave Winfield. If not completing the game was true, it would be ruled a joint no-hitter just like the Orioles 3 man no hitter in 1991 and the Astros 6-man no hitter against the Yankees.
