A's sign Cabrera to a one year four million dollar deal.

This sure makes things interesting in the AL West.

It looks as if they are pursuing Nomar as well... would he play second base?

It's starting to look like the former ROY Crosby is a bust... I doubt they'll even be able to move him with the contract they gave him.

And they said the A's wouldn't be making any moves...

I'm not too excited about this deal .. Cabrera has done nothing at the plate to warrant 4 mil... hopefully his fielding will be better then Crosbys and he is willing to play with a hangnail or a stubbed toe because Bobby wouldn't.... Crosby will be a valuable expensive back-up and potential All-Star in Sacramento. :waving.. take Eric Chavez with you...............

ps: actually Beane was quite slow in this move and could have done better...he could have picked up second baseman Orlando Hudson for 3.8 mil on the free agent market and then packaged Crosby and Mark Ellis for Rafael Furcal...............

I always liked Crosby but he has been hot and cold and he looks like he is joining the Nick Johnson Injury Club.

Do you think Beane will try and trade him? He will obviously have to eat some of the salary.

I can see Crosby being traded, but his contract could also get sold to Japan or something like that- I just don't see another MLB club taking a chance on his injury-ridden past.

As far as Cabrera goes, I'm not completely sold on him either. Signing guys like him, Giambi and Nomar makes me question which direction the team is heading.

Do you think ticket sales has anything to do with it ?

there is a lot of people out of work here in the East Bay...the A's will be lucky to draw 15-20 thousand a game...Beane and Wolfe are full of crap if they think we believe one year we are going with a youth movement and the next year sign all these players way past their prime and give up a young player like Gonzalez etc. etc.....You would have to be an idiot to think that Holliday will not be gone by the trading deadline. They have built an offense to compete well enough till August only if we get good pitching from a very young staff and then they will unload players and get the usual prospects and money.....the A's modus operandi is pretty easy to figure out year to year... their talk of a new stadium is not sincere in my opinion either...

Looks like they're attempting to win. Yea, Giambi isn't at his prime and O-Cab isn't the *best* shortstop out there, but they both are improvements over Barton/Crosby or AAAA players that could be played there. The Giambi move will give Barton a chance to ease into a full-time role and hopefully improve at the plate. O-Cab displacing Crosby might anger him into playing better when he gets the chance?

I don't see what's wrong with signing a guy or two that is on his way out for a pretty low price to use for a year or two. The Big Hurt was a great rental during his first tenure here and cost almost nothing the second time around. Piazza was ok when he was healthy. Giambi on the other hand hasn't had many health problems to speak of, so I think he's a great pickup.

Either way, it's not a bad idea to have log jams everywhere seeing how many times the DL has been used the past 2 seasons.

Wow the A's are getting alot of talent, first Holliday, then Giambi, now Cabrera, what next, Manny Ramirez?

They're trying to remain competitive while their prospects develop. Since they're a low-budget club, they're getting the best sure talent for the money. Do you not remember the good that Frank Thomas and Milton Bradley brought?

He might still be blocking out that time period when Zito went across the bay to die :laugh

In all seriousness, it will allow some of the focus to move away from the younger players (READ: Travis Buck and others who struggled when stuck in the spotlight). It's not a long term soloution, but a great stop-gap measure imho.
