LAKELAND, Fla. – The Tigers recently agreed to one-year deals with right-handers Zach Miner and Armando Galarraga, among others, leaving only a handful of Detroit major leaguers without signed contracts for the year.

Miner will earn $437,500 if he spends the entire 2009 season in the big leagues. Galarraga is set to make $435,000 if he does the same.

Galarraga had better statistics than Miner last season – he led the team with 13 victories – but Miner has roughly one more year of big-league service. That’s one significant reason why Miner is set to earn more than Galarraga in 2009.

Signings such as these are fairly routine at this time of year. Teams have until March 11 to renew the contracts of players already on the 40-man roster.

It has been about 11 months since the Tigers signed a player (Miguel Cabrera) to a multiyear contract.

This year, the minimum salary is $400,000 for players who spend the entire season in the major leagues. Many players in the farm system who are not on the 40-man roster will earn around $10,000 this year – 2.5% of the minimum big-league salary, in other words – as per the scale throughout organized baseball.
