I was wanting to get some feedback on how you throw a bullpin? How many pitches of each pitch and how many times a week? My son is 13 but I would like feedback on older pitchers as well.

Thanks
Mark

Son is 11.....2-3 times a week 40-50 pitches in groups of 5 each bullpen. Video, video, video, video!!! Work on correcting one thing at a time - sometimes this takes 10 pitches sometimes a month. Make sure he watches the video with you. Good Luck

With my 10 year old, we do Jaegers workout(with an emphasis on mechanics), then 30, 40, and 50 from the mound. Half with two seams and half with change ups.

That's 3 times a week 30, 40, 50.

Fastball and changeup is all you need. Work on perfecting that.

I would not do more than 30-50 pitches. Put your attention on the quality first not on maximum output.

Yes. We go nice and relaxed. Mechanics break down, we shut it down regardless of #'s.

It depends how much the pin weighs.

2zwudz,

In case you haven’t been told, the term is bullpen. But don't let someone making you the butt of some stupid joke cloud your thoughts about everyone else here. It was just an honest mistake that didn’t call for ridicule.

As for your original question, don't get locked into what someone else does. Just remember to not allow him to throw too many pitches, no matter what he says, and that was some really good advice from Joe W. I’ll even go a bit further and add not to try to make any very big changes. Make small changes that allow him stay on top of what he’s doing.

Thats what I did when I was in high school ... I would do probably 50-60% FB's tho and then the remaining pitches I divided fairly evenly (CB and Change) but probably threw more changes most of the time.

off season he throws 1 bullpen a week if mechanics look good. we run sets in 7 stages like a inning no more then 15 pitches per stage. with a five min break in between stages

1 is all 4 seams down the middle
2 is 2 seams down the middle
3 is work on change up in and out
4 is 4 seam and 2 seam but working the corners inside and out
5 is breaking pitch generally cutter and a modified cutter working outside corner
6 is 4or 2 seam in side corner cutter modified outside corner
7 is situational has to throw strike to get three outs.

pre season we cut this down to 5-7 pitches 2 times a week and during season back 1 once a week.

we have found as long as he feels good and arm is sound he throws 90% power

Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see anyone recommend throwing from the stretch. In my experience, only the very best P’s don’t throw at least 50% of their pitches from the stretch.

The attachment is from the last 2 years of HSV, for a team that has been very successful.

Lighten up SK. The problem with libs is they lack a sense of humor.

our bullpen routine is as follows....

after stretching/cardio routine to get blood pumping, begins with throwing progressions

1. both knees on the floor
2. One knee up with one foot in the ground, pushing up as you throw to your feet and following through over the outstretched knee
3. Stand up, lock both hips, throwing and following through out front
4. Balance point
5. Slide step
6. Full wind up on flat ground
(6-8 tosses are made from each position, mixing in all pitches)

Bullpen

From Wind Up
8 Fastball
6 Change Up
6 Breaking Ball
6 "Other" (if you have one, if not throw changeups)

Take a 3-5 minute break

From Stretch:
6 Fastball
4 Change Up
4 Curve
4 "Other"

Then face two batters ,one right handed and one left handed, have your catcher call pitches

Should be moving the ball in and out, up and down, working on smooth, fluid mechanics and HITTING SPOTS!
