View Full Version : Do you watch games from the 80's on MLBN?

Today there have been a couple on. One thing I noticed is that even the "big" guys look like toothpicks compared to todays standards. Oscar Gamble was a pretty big home run threat back in they day. He looks like a stick figure.
Goes to show how the culture has changed. Nowadays all the teams have weight rooms, personal trainers, legal supplements like creatine (yes some illegal ones...we know...we know) etc etc. Back then weight training was still taboo.

Yeah and it was kind of nice having players that looked like average joes. Thats one of the reasons why baseball became so identifiable with people, you didnt have to be 7 foot or 300 lbs to play it. Still holds true today but to a much lesser extent.

Very true but even without artificial help players would be bigger because of the weights and nutrition, and legal supplementation.

I know exactly what you mean.
As far as watching the games I can't really sit there for a whole game.

Players would be bigger but they wouldnt be 300 lb gorillas. Yeah, watching an entire game that was played decades ago isnt doable for me either - but i leave it on and come back to it at some key moments and its worth a look.

Not really sure who is 300lbs but ok. I can do work on my laptop and have MLBN as backround. As far as watching intently...cant do it either.

I believe Barry Bonds head alone was 3 and a half bills.

Depends on the game. Seaver's 300th victory was on last Saturday and I was pretty much glued to the set the whole time. It was amusing to hear Hawk saying that he thought the Henderson for Howell deal was a great one for both teams. :laugh
Though it might have been if Oakland had held on to Rijo.

Yeah, some of the talk in context is interesting. Like in Fidrych's game they were talking about canidates for ROTY and they mentioned him but named two other guys as what it sounded like they felt as front runners. So i looked up and he got all but 2 votes that year for the honor.

It was interesting to here the announcers talking about what a great year Rickey was having in '85 with NO mention of his OBP.
It was also great seeing Mattingly swing the bat.

I just signed on to start a thread on just this subject. Paulypal beat me to it. I watched the entire Fidrych game. Classic! Baseball needs more characters like him. I couldn't believe how fast he worked. I also watched Seavers' and Perrys' 300th victories. Perry looks like he belonged in a local tavern softball league. How refreshing! I was just a teenager back then and unfortunately my not yet fully developed brain was more interested in football at that point. I still liked baseball but didn't appreciate the game as much as I do now.
What do you guys think of the MLB network overall? I like the Prime 9 series and also the MLB Tonight has great potential. I can't wait to see it during the regular season. Hopefully it will interject much more stats and updates than ESPN's Baseball Tonight. Good to see Harold Reynolds again too.

I've been very impressed so far. Great to see a lot of historical shows, and the studio shows have been interesting as well. Last night they spent like 5-10 minutes with Barry Larkin detailing his favorite fielding drills and warmups. Hopefully they'll keep up that kind of in depth baseball coverage when we get to the regular season.

I got a laugh out of Uecker's constant mispronunciation of Fidrych's name.

Yeah the little infield drills demo last night was pretty cool. Sitting in my cold northern house it brought me a little joy if nothing else.
John Hart - i have even more respect for this guy then i did before. What a great baseball mind and the way he delivers his thoughts is flawless. Hope he stays on but i'm assuming once the season begins we will see less of him?
Barry Larkin and Sean Casey - Being from Cincy i am loving every minute of this. Lark seems more polished in the studio then The Mayor does but you have to love both of them and hearing Lark talk about infield work makes anyone listen
Harold Reynolds - Love this guy too, he is funny and really knows the game. ESPN's loss is MLBN's gain.
