I'm glad to see everyone is discussing this issue and airing out their feelings. It is probably both a good thing and a bad thing with this latest development re: A-Rod. It is going to take some time for everyone to work through the full meaning of all of this to baseball and our favorite players. And we've got a long road ahead of us before all is said and done.

At least the core fundamentals of the sport itself will always remain the constant. There will always be mitts, bats, base paths, green grass, chalk lines, pitcher's mounds and everything else. Personally, I just hope at some point steroids are no longer also a constant in the background of everything in the sport.

Can someone tell me why one positive test doesn't = banned from MLB? That is one way they can control it better.

The problem is that steroids are ILLEGAL. If a player killed a man, he would be banned from MLB and jailed. I know that is more extreme than using steroids, but come on...only a 10 game suspension for a positive test? The average joe would get arrested and possibly jailed for possesion. Why do theses players get a pass?

A player would have to be caught with steroids in their possession to be penalized by law.

The MLB is not the government. If you test positive at work for drugs you will not go to jail just like ARod won't go to jail for testing positive for drugs. Secondly the penalty for a positive test isn't 10 games but 50 games, a third of their season a third of their paycheck.

Also sports has a long history of employing criminals.

I think it was comedian Chris Rock who once said regarding steroids that "if there was a pill that would help me do my job better, you bet your ass I would take it." Chris Rock has a way of bluntly putting things.
