Veteran relief pitcher Tom Gordon, a member of last season's world champion Philadelphia Phillies, signed a one-year, $500,000 contract Friday with the Diamondbacks.

The right-hander can make an additional $2 million in bonuses under the agreement.

Gordon, 41, had a 5-4 record, two saves and a 5.16 ERA last year for the Phillies.

However, his season ended in July with right-elbow inflammation that put him on the disabled list.

"It's a lot better," Gordon said of his elbow. "I'm grateful that Dr. (James) Andrews got the chance to assess me and see where I was. I didn't have to have Tommy John surgery ,and I didn't have to have it set me back any longer.

"I should be right around 100 percent (at the beginning of spring training). I'll get on the mound Monday, and I look forward to seeing where I'm at."

Gordon did not allow a run in 24 of his 34 appearances last season.

"He will improve our depth," Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "His experience pitching in key roles for winning teams was also important to us."
