Four Tigers avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to one-year contracts before Tuesday’s deadline to exchange figures. Justin Verlander was not one of them.

The Tigers will meet Verlander and his representatives at an arbitration hearing next month in Arizona unless the parties reach an agreement. President/general manager Dave Dombrowski said in an e-mail Tuesday that the team is still “open to continue negotiations.”

In filings with Major League Baseball and the players’ union, Verlander asked for a $4.15-million salary; the team set its figure at $3.2 million. If the case advances to a hearing, the arbiter must decide one value or the other, as opposed to a number in between.

It’s not clear if a multiyear contract has been considered as one means of reaching an accord. When asked about that possibility, Dombrowski replied, “That is something we keep internally.”

Verlander’s representatives at SFX Baseball did not respond to messages Tuesday. When asked last January about his future, Verlander said, “I love it here. I want to stay here. I would like to stay here for my whole career.”

Catcher Gerald Laird ($2.8 million plus incentives), right-hander Edwin Jackson ($2.2 million plus incentives), left-hander Bobby Seay ($1.3 million) and Joel Zumaya ($735,000) agreed to contracts Tuesday.

The Tigers have not gone to arbitration with a player since Dombrowski joined the organization after the 2001 season.

Before last year, Verlander was on track to challenge, and perhaps exceed, the $4.35-million record for first-year-eligible starting pitchers established by Dontrelle Willis. Then Verlander had a disappointing 2008 season during which he went 11-17 with a 4.84 ERA in 33 starts. He is not due to become a free agent until after the 2011 season.

DETROIT (AP) — Right-hander Juan Rincon agreed Tuesday to a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Rincon was 3-3 with a 5.86 ERA in 47 appearances last season for the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians. He has a 31-27 record and a 3.80 ERA with 431 strikeouts in 409 innings during eight seasons in the majors.

I always hated to see Rincon warming up in the 'pen when we played the Twins, he was usually lights-out. He had an off year last year, and hopefully he can turn it around again with some hard off-season work. Either way, inking him to a minor-league deal is pretty low-risk, high-reward for us. Worth a shot.
