It's time for the final vote of the 1935 VC players election. Voters can vote for as many candidates as they wish, with 75% support required to elect a player. Voting will be open for five days, at which point we'll tabulate votes provided we have a quorum (at least 12 members having voted). Anyone is free to participate in the discussion and submit a ballot, but only ballots from the 16 VC members will be counted.

Final Ballot (9)
Tommy Bond
Jack Chesbro
Lave Cross
Clark Griffith
Charley Jones
Jim McCormick
Jimmy Sheckard
Mike Tiernan
Ned Williamson

I'd rather vote for none, but that doesn't seem appropriate if you're going to have a VC. That being the case, I'm going to vote for precisely one candidate. I'll listen for a couple of days worth of pitches for who among this group is best, though I have my own ideas as well.

Looking at who's on the preliminary and who is on the final ballot, it looks like the general electorate has done a good job to this point. If Tommy Leach doesn't get elected before the next VC ballot, he will be the first player since the original VC ballot that I feel strongly deserves to be on our hall based on our standards. I'm not especially hot on any of these players, but see these as close to our current standards:

Clark Griffith
Charley Jones
Jimmy Sheckard
Mike Tiernan
Ned Williamson

Clark Griffith - I supported him throughout his time on the regular ballot, although I could see the other side of that one. I have a very hard time understanding how he isn't an easy choice here though. He is at least close as a player only and now we can consider his managerial and ownership careers. That is quite a package.
Jimmy Sheckard - meets the outfield standard we have previously established.

All very good players, but since they all already were not elected in the regular voting, I'm gonna be extra critical here. If I was voting there's just one player I'd be on:

Long Charley Jones
Win shares per 162 - 29.42
Isolated power - .144
All time HR leader until 1885.
Win Shares second best position player in 1879 (Hines)
Win Shares best position player in the AA in 1884 (tied with Orr)

By far the best level of play of any position player on the ballot. If he had played in later years with 154 game schedules he'd have much more impressive numbers. He was the top LFer of the 1876-1879 period, and every other position player who was the best at his position in the 1870s has been inducted except for RF(C-McVey, C-White, 1B-Start, 2B-Barnes, 3B-Sutton, SS-Wright, CF-Hines, Pike) I've got O'Rourke listed as the first team RFer from 1876-1879, but he actually played more CF in the 1870s than anywhere else. This means that we have not inducted any corner OFers from the 1870s yet. Doesn't mean we have to, but Jones had a career OPS+ of 150 (133 in 13 games in the NA) and would have been inducted easily if he had played at a time when the schedules were longer. He also was blackballed for a couple of years (1881-1882) right in his prime. Certainly the best corner OFer of the first five years of the NL and also the best corner OFer in the AA for a 5 year period (1883-1887) as Browning was plaing mainly CF then and Stovey mainly 1B then.

Tommy Bond and Clark Griffith are the next best candidates for me, but just below the line at this time. I expect that Griffith will be inducted as a contributor eventually.

Here's what these 9 players look like, in the same order as above:

Bond is on the left in the back row in the first picture. Chesbro, Cross, Griffith and Jones after that. The rest in the next post.

McCormick, Tiernan, Sheckard and Williamson:

How many base balls did Goodwin & Co. hang in its studio? Do you suppose that there was only one which they moved from set to set?

Is it game used? or mud or licorice stained? It doesn't look white.

Must be tobacco stained ;)

It doesn't look white. How can you tell? Tiernan maybe (actually, the photo looks doctored), but the others look like they could be white.

I would guess Jimmy Sheckard would be the most similar type of player in this bunch.

There's a day left and we have 13 votes in. Even if we get all 16 votes, I don't believe it's possible to elect anyone this time around.

I have added Clark Griffith to my ballot. That currently gives him 10/14. I think there's 2 people on the VC who haven't voted. If they both include Griffith, or if 1 person changes his ballot and no one else votes, he would be inducted.

Jimmy Sheckard is also very close and only needs a changed ballot or 2 to get there.

No one will be inducted by the VC this time. Clark Griffith again was the closest. Here are the full results:

Clark Griffith: 71.43% (10 votes)
Jimmy Sheckard: 57.14% (8 votes)
Mike Tiernan: 50.00% (7 votes)
Jim McCormick: 42.86% (6 votes)
Charley Jones: 35.71% (5 votes)
Lave Cross: 25.00% (4 votes)
Tommy Bond: 18.75% (3 votes)
Ned Williamson: 14.29% (2 votes)
Jack Chesbro: 0% (0 votes)
