The Tigers announced Monday that they have invited 13 players to their major league camp this spring, including top prospects Ryan Perry, a right-handed reliever, and Cale Iorg, a shortstop.

Right-hander Rick Porcello, the organization's best prospect, is already assured of a spot in big-league camp because he is on the 40-man roster.

The team's pitchers and catchers will report to Lakeland, Fla., on Feb. 13, with their first workout scheduled for the following day. The full squad will be in uniform together for the first time Feb. 17.

Three invitees have experience in the majors: catcher Dane Sardinha, infielder Don Kelly and outfielder Alexis Gomez. Kelly and Gomez spent the past two seasons with other organizations but have returned to the Tigers on minor league contracts.

Two relievers who received invitations -- right-handers Casey Fien and Rudy Darrow -- are likely to enter camp with realistic chances of making Detroit's Opening Day roster.

Left-handed starter Jon Kibler (Michigan State) and catcher Jeff Kunkel (Michigan) are among the invitees with local ties. Catcher Alex Avila is the son of Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila and attended Warren De La Salle for one school year.

Others among the 13 are catcher Max St. Pierre and infielders Will Rhymes and Scott Sizemore.

I'm excited to see what Fien and Darrow can do. Not to mention 40-mans Kyle Bloom and Zach Simons. There's hope for this pitching staff just yet!

I like the prospect (pun inteded) of Cale Iorg taking a crack at the roster, but I'd like to see Danny Worth come up before Iorg. Our future middle infield??

No Freddy Guzman? Doesn't the guy have Carlos Gomez-type speed? Maybe he doesn't get on base enough?

February is a tough month as far as weather and work. It's difficult to grasp that there's still 2 months of winter. However, February gives us the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the NBA all star game, the Grammys, and yes... PITCHERS AND CATCHERS REPORT!!!! :D

I hope Leyland doesn't get stuck on players' ages again. If they're good enough to make the team and do some damage to the opponent, then let 'em play, who cares how old they are or how much experience they have. If Perry and Porcello are good enough (or better than what we have as alternatives) then bring 'em back from Lakeland and watch 'em go.
