Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians announced on Monday they have signed Kelly Shoppach for the 2009 season, avoiding arbitration with the catcher.
Shoppach appeared in a career-high 112 games last season and batted .261 with 27 doubles, 21 homers and 55 runs batted in. His 21 home runs led all American League catchers, while his RBI total ranked fourth among AL backstops.
In 221 career contests with Boston and Cleveland, the 28-year-old is hitting .252 with 31 home runs and 101 RBI.
The Indians also announced that infielder Michael Aubrey cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus. He was designated for assignment on January 6 to make room on the 40-man roster for Carl Pavano.
