What do you send the college players? I was wanting to try some Louisville players but didn't know what to get signed.

Custom 4x6's and Signature Card CIC's are what I send. Louisville actually gives out their mailing address with no statement that prohibits autographs (some schools do in the cases of players, though supposedly ANY coach will sign at ANY time of the year), so you're likely to get a return from them.

Happy new year everyone! I haven't been around lately, mostly because it's been a while since I've had a success to post.

As far as the NCAA autograph conversation going on here, I don't mean to evesdrop but here's a little information. Recently the NCAA has started governing autographs and the so called "exploiting" of athletes and personalities. It's seems as if its almost up to the universities as to how much they want to enforce this rule because I've had varying degrees of success/failures when it comes to the NCAA athletes. I recently had a conversation with a coach from the UCLA basketball program. I was told that due to "compliance" I needed to state the reason I am obtaining my items and what they will be used for. I answered for my own personal collection and within days media guides, pocket schedules, posters, pom poms, etc. showed up in my mailbox. On the flipside I got my items RTS from USC with a letter stating the new NCAA guidelines and how they no longer can sign autographs. The University of Florida goes as far as to send a letter listing which athletes they don't allow to sign because the request have become overwhelming.

What I find very funny is if you go on websites for several schools, they have links where you can purchase autographed items. Hmmm...

Thanks for the responses regarding the NCAA autographs. I am still finding players that had a good success rate last year.

Last ST I sent to Jim Thome, Joba Chamberlain, and Phil Hughes because people were getting success left and right. I never recieved anything! Then I started seeing Thome successes in the mid-season so I didn't give up. Still nothing to this day. Is it being "stolen" from the post office or do I have a case of bad luck?

I start just about the time that pitchers and catchers report. I figure that way, they may get a chance to sign them in the slower first days of camp.

Yeah, pretty much...I figure that when pitchers and catchers report, some of the regular guys report early. I guess for pitchers or catchers, sending a few days before camp opens would give you the same effect.

Of course, that's when I start sending...I'll send until maybe the last two weeks of ST.

On an average from the time I pick up my pen to when I seal the outer envelope it takes me approximately 5 minutes per request. I take my time and write EVERYTHING neatly, proofread my letter for any errors, then on to the next request. It doesn't take that long to write out two envelopes and a letter.

The last spring training games aren't until around the first of April, so you probably have another week or so to send to ST. One thing to note, if a guy is playing in the WBC, many of them have just recently left spring training sites for the WBC training camp. Best to wait for the regular season for those guys.

Yeah, figured as much for Boggs but I have seen a lot of people get him here and there, so it's worth a shot I think. Maybe I'll be surprised. I sent the 1996 Topps Jimmy Key for a reason since he is a strong signer, and I just want one different Yankee card for each year, so if I don't get Boggs but get Key, I can cross 1996 off my list.

Yes, I am sending out the actual 1950s cards. I am aware of the Topps Archives and they are great cards, I just want the cards for this project to be originals. I know it's risky to send the old cards, but I figure since it's for the project it's worth the risk...and I am sending to guys who seem to be good signers, so let's call it a calculated risk (still no one is a guarantee as we all know). The cards I am buying are not in great condition for the most part, but I also think that gives it even more of a cool, more vintage feel. I usually spend between $1-$5 (ebay) on the 1950s cards + shipping. Thanks for your interest in the project.

Last Thursday I sent an A&G card. Then, a few days ago, I found a couple more cards...'08 Topps and '08 Topps Opening Day. I hit them with baby powder and sent 'em off. If he's signing this spring, I could potentially get three cards signed by him. If he only signs the first one I sent, it's the nicest card. If I lose these last two, or really, all three, it's no great loss.

When should I stop sending to ST addresses and start with the major league addresses?

Me personally... I am done sending out to ST. I will start sending to Major League addys in another 2 weeks or so.

I think the cards I sent today will be it for major league spring training. I have a few I'll send to minor league camps this week, then I'm onto the regular season.

I've seen a couple of ST successes, that's why I tried him. He didn't sign c/o the team last year during the regular season.

So, to answer your question, I'm not sure. I may or may not get back the cards I sent to ST, but I figured it was worth a shot when I saw a few successes.

We've had a recent success with Clay Buchholz and not all guys that sign cards sign 8x10's (or do so by special request only...I've encountered a few guys in my Steve Dalkowski book project that do that).

It might be just me, but it seems like the recent run of Clay Buchholz (and Craig Hansen) returns has dried up. I got Clay on 3/5, when everyone was getting him, and I've only seen 1 success from him since, and was the day after I got it. Good Luck anyways.
