who here likes the top hand release. my son is 9 and has been doing it now for about 2 months and has hit very well with it. however, i feel sometimes like he releases to early and hits 1 handed. he gets mad at me and said he will not do it any more. his hitting has not been as good since. im not sure which way to go from here.

As long as its after extension it doesn't matter.

I like the one-hand release but I have also seen rare labrum problems result from a one-hand release.

Be careful.

It is style rather than technique. I recommend doing whatever your comfortable with.

Agreed. Stance, Load, and in this case finishing with 1 hand or 2 is your own individual style.

I've dealt with some good hitters that on pitches middle-in finish with both hands and on pitches outer half will release their top hand AFTER extension and they don't even realize they are doing it. Probably just a "feel" thing.

I think it must not happen before the bat head whips through, so that both hands can create some torque(or change the path of the knob as with Nyman or move the top hand past the bottom hand as with Yeager). I think this is a critical concept. When you release early your front arm will disconnect/extend and the bat head will move with the hand instead of whipping past it.

I'd skip it for a 9 year old.

Weird ... but yeah thats why I said after extension because then your swing is slowing down. If you did it too early I could see how hitting the ball could put pressure but I'm skeptical of any problems if you release post extension.
