My son has a tryout for a team this Friday evening. I took him to the ped. yesterday and they think he is coming down with Strep. This happened at a tryout last season and I would not tell the coach my son was sick. He actually was doing well as far as drills, but wasn't showing any hussle. Needless to say he missed making the team by one player. I have wondered if I should of told the coach or not.

My question is should I tell the coach today about my son's doctor visit or wait and see how he does.

I didn't tell them the last time because I didn't want it to look like I was making excuses for him.

What would you do?

all i can say is dont try and make excuses to coaches, they expect you to show up %100 weather your injured or not

it doesnt matter, all i can say is this season, work as hard as he can, im serious, pitching machine, tee work, everything

my personal experiances, tear it up during the season and youll get called up and hopefully stay there

What did the doc say? If he said it was unlikely he'll be able to, or that your son probably shouldn't tryout, I'd give the coach a call now. Tell him what's going on. It's that time of year, people get sick. I'm sure they'll understand and appreciate the call. I'd ask about an alternative tryout date (if your son is sick Friday).

Tryouts aren't really for everyone. Coaches have most of their team selected before tryouts start. Perhaps your son is among those on their radar already and the phone call will net a response that he's going to make the team anyway.

Good luck and hope your boy feels better.

My thoughts were to call him and just let him know. This coach is behind in selecting his team. Apparently he had some kids that were going to play for his team had to drop out for $$$ reasons. It stinks that baseball has become such an expense in these economic times. I actually was thinking about how many kids were not going to sign up for the spring seasons. Locally, some of the districts are offering a discount to sign up by 12/31/08

I am pretty confident that my son will be feeling better before the tryout. I know that when he is taking antibiotics he is about a step behind his normal pace.

NYC, I’m surprised they did not do a culture test on the spot. If he does have it and he’s not on antibiotics yet he might be contagious at tryouts if he's running a temp and no hustle.

As reference my son in spring ball had mentioned to me during the last inning of a game that his throat was burning.(This was on a Friday night.) After the game I took him to the emergency room. High temp with Strep, went on anitibiotics immediately and was feeling good enough to play that Monday for
our next game. He’s 9.

As a youth coach I'd certainly understand and would schedule him for another time. Not sure what level your at. Good luck and hope your son gets better soon.

Coach,

He did pass the culture and is on antibiotics. He is a young 9. He says he feels better than yesterday. I took him and his little brother to the batting cages tonite. It cracks me up to see my 7 YO hit. He screams "Awesome!" after every hit and "ohh maann" after every miss. My older son is always trying to get to stop being so loud. I crack up every time.

He should be good to go by then, have him rest up. These little guys are quick to recover. They do crack you up, sounds like your sons are really enjoying the journey, keep it up.
