The Tigers did not tender a contract to reliever Aquilino Lopez before Friday's midnight deadline, making him a free agent.
Lopez went 4-1 with a 3.55 ERA in 48 games with Detroit this season.
The team had interest in bringing back Lopez, but not at the salary he would have earned through arbitration. When the sides could not come to terms on a less expensive deal, the Tigers cut him.
Lopez, 33, is now eligible to sign with all 30 teams, including the Tigers.

Lopez's numbers are surprisingly better then the effectiveness I REMEMBER him showing. I guess I need to get a new memory chip in me head?

I imagine he's one of those guys who pitches well when it doesn't matter and pitches poorly when it does matter.

Nah, he was just one of those guys that did okay. Was he the worst, not by any stretch, was he AWESOME, not by any stretch. When he was bad he gave up other pitchers runs, and when he was good he collected WINS. I guess there is something to be said about that. If another team gets him, lemme give you the scouting report, SLIDER, SLIDER, SLIDER. He has a decent slider.
Out of all the relief corps last year, there's not a single pitcher I would remotely consider returning. Trade or dump the entire pen.

He was decent as a long reliever last season, but I doubt he will return. IMO the Tigers need to sign a decent lefty and dominant righty such as Will Ohman and Juan Cruz.

I read somewhere that Lopez had the second-worst percentage (just over 50%) of inherited runners scoring. Could have had a factor. He certainly wasn't a force or feared arm coming out of the 'pen, that's for sure.

I always thought he should have had a chance to close...but I guess he doesn't throw hard enough.

Inherited runners scoring and pitching well only when we're already down by 4 or more runs sums him up quite nicely. He should never be any team's first right-handed option out of the bullpen. Our starters' ERAs were higher because of him. The 4-1 record tells you that the offense had the ability to come from behind at times.. that's all. He rarely pitched with a lead.
So to that I say.. yay! Now, what to do with Bobby Seay?
The problem I have with all the relievers is the high BB rate. Even Bobby Seay's walks increased significantly. Lopez had the best BB rate and best ERA but, he will be 34 so, I don't want to see him return. The pen was so bad, give the youngsters a chance. They can't do worse than these reject veterans.
