Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox signed five free agents Friday to minor league contracts, including outfielder Paul McAnulty, who was on the opening day roster of the San Diego Padres last season.
Boston also inked right-handed pitchers Enrique Gonzalez and Marcus McBeth, left-handed pitcher Billy Traber and infielder Gil Velazquez. All five were invited to Boston's major league spring training camp as non-roster players.
The 27-year-old McAnulty appeared in 66 games last season for the Padres, hitting .207 with three home runs and 13 RBI. He was outrighted to Triple-A Portland on July 8 where he posted a .343 average, 13 homers and 50 RBI over 53 games.
Gonzalez was also with the Padres organization last season, and went 7-5 with a 4.44 ERA in 35 games/13 starts at Triple-A Portland. He was also 1-0 with a 10.80 ERA in four appearances with the Padres.
Traber spent the majority of last season playing for Triple-A Scranton- Wilkes/Barre and went 2-1 with four saves and a 3.40 ERA in 40 games (two starts) there. He also made 19 appearances with the Yankees, going 0-0 with a 7.02 ERA.
Velazquez was re-signed by the Red Sox after batting .260 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI in 101 games for Triple-A Pawtucket in 2008.
McBeth, a reliever, split last season between the Cincinnati and Boston systems after being claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on August 13.
The Red Sox also announced they will not tender catcher Kevin Cash a contract, for 2009, making him a free agent He had spent each of the previous two seasons with the Red Sox organization and hit .225 with three homers and 15 RBI in 61 games for the parent club in 2008.
