With the hope of uncovering a diamond in the rough, the Indians on today signed veteran starter Tomo Ohka to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to major-league training camp.

As a nonroster invitee, Ohka, 32, will come to spring training with a big-league record of 50-63 and 4.14 ERA compiled over nine seasons with Boston, Montreal/Washington, Milwaukee and Toronto.

The right-hander last appeared in a major-league game with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007, when he posted a 2-5 record and 5.79 ERA in 10 starts after opening the season as the No. 5 starter. He spent all of last season with Charlotte, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, where he was 5-11 with a 4.18 ERA in 28 games, including 20 starts. In his eight relief outings, Ohka was 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA.

Ohka's most successful season in the big leagues came in 2002, when he posted a 13-8 record and 3.18 ERA (7th best in the NL) for the Expos. Before coming to the majors, Ohka pitched in Japan with the Yokohama Bay Stars from 1994-1998.

He joins infielder Andy Cannizaro and catcher Damaso Espino as Tribe nonroster invitees.
