Shortstop Jason Bartlett was voted the Rays' most valuable player, and he was a big part in Tampa Bay's improbable run to the World Series.

Now the Rays are willing to trade him, according to a baseball official who has spoken to the Rays. Not only that, but the Rays have also discussed trying to reacquire Delmon Young, :crazy the outfielder who they traded to the Twins last winter to get Bartlett and Matt Garza.

It doesn't appear that the Young talks got very far, and neither did Tampa Bay's efforts to acquire Denard Span, another Twins outfielder. But the Rays are continuing to search everywhere for another outfielder, and Bartlett could be what it takes to acquire one.

As good as Bartlett was for the Rays in 2008, it's actually not that hard to understand why they would move him. One of the Rays' top prospects is shortstop Reid Brignac, who played at Triple-A Durham in 2008. Also, the Rays took another shortstop, Tim Beckham, as the top overall pick in last June's draft.

Unless they feel Brignac is ready to take over in 2009, no way they will trade Bartlett in this offseason. Unless they feel they can sell high and get someone to overpay for him, I feel he will definitely be back.

I agree. While I'd guess pretty much anybody is tradeable for the right price (notice the lower case 'P'), it'd probably take an impressive package to pry Bartlett away. I like what he brings to the team and would be in no hurry to make Brignac the regular SS, as there are still questions about his ability to hit major league pitching.

And no Delmon, pls, ,tho that one tidbit makes me question the validity of the whole article.

Yeah, they got rid of Delmon for a reason and his medicore season this year made them look smart. Why in hell would they ever bring him back? It would shock me. Dont know why they would move Bartlett either since he was the answer at SS that they have been searching all franchise long for. I write these off as dirty rumors.... or at least for TB fan's sake i hope they are.

The Rays would be smart to trade Jason Bartlett now IF they have another option at SS. His popularity is high and his value is the highest its ever been. In truth, he's not the best SS. The Rays are accustomed to extremely poor defensive SS. Believe it or not, Rickie Weeks, a poor infielder, has better fielding numbers than Bartlett. Bartlett's lack of range and errors didn't lose games THAT year.

I made the same comments about Willie Hermnandez after the 1984 season. Sometimes, its just a player peaking in the right system while, at the same time, being lucky.
