Bob Fothergill played from 1922 to 1933, hitting .325 with a .368 OBP and a 1.14:1 BB/K ratio.

Despite having a great career batting average and a good eye at the plate, Fothergill didn't really play much. In fact, he doesn't even average three at-bats per game he appeared in. This can be attributed to the fact that the outfield was already filled with stars - Bobby Veach, Ty Cobb, Harry Heilmann, Heinie Manush. Nevertheless, he is 40th all-time in batting average.

None of the 10 players most similar to him statistically are in the Hall of Fame. Those ten players are: Taffy Wright, Lew Fonseca, Socks Seybold, Joe Harris, Freddy Leach, George Harper, Moose Solters, Charlie Hickman, Rip Radcliff and Benny Kauff.

What is your opinion on Fats Fothergill? Should he be in the Hall of Fame? Should he be in the Hall of Very Good?

Fats Fothergill was a part time player for all but one season. His OPS+ was only 115. His batting average was helped by the fact that he played alongside Ty Cobb, Heinie Manush, Harry Heilman, Bobby Veach and several other superstars. Fothergill also lived life in the fast lane and died young as a result. He was not the nicest guy and his defensive rating is a D which is terrible. Minus a batting average which was likely inflated due to the players who hit before and after him in the lineup, Fothergill has nothing going for him. He is the first player listed in your series who doesn't even belong in the conversation as anything other than a good pinch hitter with an infamous attitude.

I think the HOF should elect Fatty Fothergill and Slim Sallee, and they'll cancel each other out, and neither will be in the Hall.

Manny Mota would be a better choice. No way, no how.
