View Full Version : Baseball Hall of Famers who have never appeared on "modern" baseball cards

I'm trying to come up with a collection of a "book" featuring a card of every single baseball HOFer. Clearly the MLB players aren't a problem, given the old Galassco set, and the surge of "retired" sets and premium cards over the last 20 years, there is an abundance of sweet and affordable cards.

But, there seems to be some holes in recent years, and so I know exactly that I'm on a "dead end" mission rather than searching for white whales, does anyone know that there truly aren't cards for say Walter O'Malley, Bowie Kuhn, Effa Manley, Bud Wilkenson and other HOFers that don't exactly "fit" into various sets.

BTW, found a Barney Dreyfuss (Pirate owner during the early 20th Century and HOFer in 2008) card in this past years Jewish Baseball Players Card set as he was honored for his enshrinement.

FWIW, "modern" is the definition that it seem Beckett's uses in its guide, as starting with the first release of MLB cards from Fleer and Donruss in 1981. Chances are many of the 19th Century HOFers and Negro Leaguers without modern cards probably have one from the "vintage" age, but chances are they are too much for me to pick up just for this project.

Bowie Kuhn has his own card that was made by Topps in 1969 (look under "Topps" in a good guide). They are rare (He had them made up by Topps so he could pass them out to people he knew), but seen on eBay from time to time. They go for good $$ because of the HOF collectors.

PS Dreyfuss is found in the 1910 D322 Tip Top set.

What about Eppa Rixey? I have never seen a card of his.

Look on ebay. There's at least 10 different ones on there right now.

He is in that Glassaco (SP) set I mentioned in the original post. The set first came out in, I want to say 1981 and you can get the original set cheap, it was called "Baseball Immortals". Mostly "bad art" cards of some, where they've been colorized and a few are just "floating head" images of the person, but they do have all of the inductees through that year.

From about 82 through the Bench/Yaz year (1989) they did updates, those updates are quite rare and I have yet to find the Hunter, Dandrige, Billy Williams, Stargell, Bench, Yaz, Barlick and Schoendienst cards. Though they aren't hard to find anyway so it isn't that big of a deal for this project of mine, I'd just like to complete that particular "set."

Heh, thanks for the tip, but like I said, I am mostly just tracking down modern cards, and mostly in sets that have been produced in recent years like Topps Archives/Retired or Fleer's Greats, due to the obvious price differences!
