In 1988, the Greater Houston Sports Association created the Rotary Smith Award to honor the top college baseball pitcher, but after the 2003 season, it was decided that it would be more appropriated to re-name the award the Roger Clemens Award, in honor of one of Houston's and baseball's greatest.
Roger gives back to the community and has helped charities greatly. Roger and his wife Debbie are passionate about giving back to society.

I think that what Roger and his wife have done, are doing is a real plus. With that said, was the author of that article attempting to diminish the negative image that much of the public has had of Roger in the last year or so, the case against him in MLB, after the hearing.

There's a link on our parent site, Baseball Almanac, to the Roger Clemens Award:

That's cool but it seems like a political campaign to cover up the image of the good -ole boy from Texas. You know, he has a lot of influential friends in his home state, including George Bush and his political cronies. Texans stick together!!
What can you say about the integrity of the man! After lying to our faces and in Congress for years. Seems like he takes after his political Texas pals.
With that said, giving back to the community is great. but there thousands of us out there who have been doing it for years, without having to toot our horns!!!

It's going to take a whole lot of giving to make up for what he's done to baseball in the last handful of years.

It's easy to be charitable when you make as much money as he does. It's much tougher to resist the temptations to cheat at baseball, to cheat on your spouse, and to treat fans poorly. Based on what he did on the diamond, he deserves to be in the HOF, but he's certainly no role model.
