Actually, I think the Yanees are more likely to get two of Sabbathia, Derek Lowe, and AJ Burnett and make a deal for a B+ level first baseman than they are to sign Teixeira.

At least, they'd be smarter to do it that way IMHO...

if Burnett opts out he'll be in Bmore imho, his wife is from MD and they reside in the MD area during the off-season, and rumor has it that he is was upset they didn't actually make him a offer several yrs ago...that he really wants to play in Bmore and be home...trust me McPhail will be hot on the phone to his agent as soon as he opts out in Toronto.

If Burnett opts out it'll be for the $$$. I'm guessing there's a lot of places he could wind up going.

San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he has heard from clubs interested in trading for ace pitcher Jake Peavy.

"We're having talks," he said.

The GM said he wouldn't be surprised if the Peavy talks heat up next month.

Ooo, so if someone really hated their farm system they could destroy it entirely and wind up with a pitcher who looked great in baseball's most severe pitcher's park while playing against the weakest offensive division in the sport.

Wouldn't be surprised if Towers found a buyer but I would be very surprised if Peavey turned in fair value for what he'll cost in talent and dollars.

Those are two reasons I'm scared as all heck that the Braves are going to trade 5-6 players to get him. On top of that, he has wacky mechanics that may be a huge problem for him in the future.

Wow, Peavy is a stud. Yeah, you would have to give up a lot, but i would think the chance to have him would be one i would be willing to take.

Have you seen his career home/road splits?

Home: 41-27, 2.77 ERA, 678 IP, 543 H, 216 R, 209 ER, 195 BB, 717 SO
Away: 45-35, 3.80 ERA, 583 IP, 546 H, 268 R, 246 ER, 212 BB, 548 SO

Seems to me to be a bit of a dropoff when he's not in Petco. He's even striking out less people on the road.

Not to mention that in the playoffs Peavey goes from lights-out to bombs-away.

I would jump at the chance to get Peavy. He is a front line starter, in a class that not many other pitchers are. I am not disputing that the price to get him would be high, probably too high, but who else is out there that isnt going to get a ridiculous FA contract? For the same reason i dont see why the Pads would part with this guy. A couple more years and he is the best pitcher in franchise history.

How much consolation is that if they continue to be a non-contender?

I think with him they have a MUCH better chance of contending. Everyone needs pitching and he is definately in the upper tier of starters. They played in a play in game last year. I just dont think trading Peavy would be the answer for them. But, if they are going to trade, i would jump at the opportunity to obtain him.

Look at C.C.Sab transfer... Peavy could be another C.C

I would like to see Peavy in the Cubs.

That wouldn't happen. If the Cubs are going to get someone new, it'll be through free agency. I don't really see them trading anyone.

That doesn't excuse you for just throwing it out there in the first place. ;)

That's why I'm not a fan of these rumor threads. Someone thinking aloud does not a rumor make.

For reference CC Sabathia now has a 3.66 career ERA, so 3.80 is bad? Be wary of the split but it could be worse.

The last rumors:

The Yankees are thought to be interested in free-agent pitchers CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets, and first baseman Mark Teixeira. Exploring a trade for San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy is possible.

The Red Sox are reportedly monitoring Brad Penny, according to the Boston Herald.
Penny will become a free agent after the Dodgers decline his 2009 option for $8.75 million. He battled shoulder problems, and ended the season with a poor 6.27 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over 19 games.

The Colorado Rockies placed a call to the San Diego Padres to inquire about Padres' ace Jake Peavy , according to the Denver Post. However, they were told that the Rockies are not one of the teams that Peavy would waive his no trade clause to go to.

The Boston Red Sox are interested in acquiring free agent Mark Teixeira, according to the Boston Globe.
The Red Sox don't really have a spot for Teixeira if they keep Lowell, Ortiz, and Youkilis. This could be a case of the Red Sox simply trying to keep him away from the Yankees, which is the constant offseason game in the AL East.

The Toronto Blue Jays are rumored to be interested in Raul Ibanez , according to Fox Sports. The Blue Jays were interested in trading for him in July, so this isn't too surprising.

Following the World Series, Jake Peavy is expected to be dealt to the Atlanta Braves, according to the New York Post.

Prior's agent has said that he would like to return to the Padres. It's hard to see Prior getting more than a minor league contract with his injury history. Prior has not appeared in a major league game since pitching for the Cubs in 2006.
