My bored self this morning decided to finally check out what this "MLB Network" thing was. It is expected to be the largest launch for a television network ever. This is what makes me, as a Time Warner cable subscriber happy.."Rather than launching with roughly 15 million subscribers on various dedicated sports tiers, the MLB Network plans to begin televising Jan. 1 to more than 50 million U.S. homes on digital or expanded basic platforms, making it by far the most successful network launch in cable TV history." We got screwed out of the NFL Network so the least they can do is give me a channel that I can watch ALL the time. Here is more about it.
"The new unit is projected to launch the MLB Network into 47 million cable and satellite homes on Jan. 1, 2009. It will be 66.6-percent owned by MLB with the remaining shares to be held in partnership with Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Cox and Comcast."
"At the time, DirecTV agreed to offer the channel on its basic tier and partner with MLB on the project, an obligation other cable networks didn't want to match. But under pressure from fans and the U.S. Congress, the three cable services took the Extra Innings package and offered to also carry the MLB Network on their basic tier in exchange for a piece of the action. "
So thank you DirecTV for pushing the greedy cable network's hand.
