I broke my beloved X the other night.... I was really pissed to say the least.I dont break bats often at all.(4 on the year...2 in game and 2 in bp) But usually during the early training sessions of the year making simple mistakes. Anyways
the umpire's zone was huge. We had him the game before and it was ridiculous then as well. We were playing bad teams both times so it didn't really matter how awful his zone was. A lot of my approach at the plate has to do with only going after pitches I can handle and spitting on the rest. Getting down 0-2 on pitches at my neck and 10 inches off the plate is really frustrating. So none the less, I broke my bat. Does anyone feel my frustration? Should I a. take these pitches that I know are not close and tell him he is god awful? or b. Swing at everything and mess with the discipline that I have worked so hard to obtain? or c. try and keep to my game and deal with it?

sorry about your bat, bats will not last forever.

On umpires, back when my son was in little league after a game he struck out in. Back then I think he had about 4 strike outs the whole year when he batted in the .750 range. He had a had year even for little league standards. He was feeling bad and talking crap about the ump. on the way home. Here is what I told him. That even in the pro's they get bad calls and those players make millions of dollars a year. Well the umpires don't but they are rated. So sometime I think it was in the next week, we were watching a game and they use the K zone and was showing fast ball missing the strike zone getting called strikes. I said son did you see that, like I said it happen everywhere.

He's playing HS ball now and knows the good and bad umpires (he is a catcher). If you are a pitcher or a batter you cannot let the umpires call get into you head. Even if you are the last out and watched a ball being called a strike, don't carry that stuff around it happens to everyone.

have fun,

What level are you? Anything less than college and the umpire will most likely blow you off if you say anything ... in college they at least try to work both ways within reason. I would say stay with your game because you will be happier with your swings and it won't create bad habits of swinging at wild pitches.

im playing post college amateur ball.. most guys played in college a couple ex minor leaguers and the rest are blah. Most umpires in my short 5 year career in these leagues keep it tight and consistent. And usually if theres a call i dont like, I'll tell him how many inches it was off the plate. most of the time they say your right, maybe i have a unique relationship with these guys. But this one guy in particular, thinks he is king **** because the "college pitchers like him" yeah no kidding if you give a kid 10 inches on either side of the plate, they wont just like you they will absolutely adore you.

I've also talked to umpires who have done these games. Many don't like being assigned these games. They say too many of the players are arrogant, past their prime prima donnas. Just play the game. If an umpire gets in your head, you lose. He controls the strike zone. You have to adjust.

i hate umpires behind the plate, because getting rung-up on a pitch 5" outside doesnt teach you a thing, except to swing at bad pitches. the way i approach it as a hitter is the first time up, i take it like a normal ab, take balls, swing at strikes, protect with 2 strikes....you know, the basics. After getting a few bad calls, and figuring out that the guy is HORRIBLE, i sum up my next ab's like this. if i can hit it, i do. simple as that. I pick a pitch i can hit, and swing. i don't let the umpire take controll of the game, because chances are, everyone on the field and off sees how bad it is, and knows why your swinging at "balls"
