LF seems to have the most players who did not play the majority of their career in LF so it seems to be the default position for a lot of players.

What field are we doing here?
Does the sound of crickets mean we're just doing outfielders in general?

Just in, the Hall of Merit rankings of leftfielders, top ten only.
1. T. Williams
2. Musial
--- (Henderson is not yet officially a HoMer) ---
3. Delahanty
4. Yastrzemski
5. Raines
6. Burkett
7. Simmons
8. Clarke
9. B. Williams
10. Irvin

: Hall of Merit Archives (see August 2008 for LF rankings) (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/hall_of_merit/archives/)
This list incorporates the result of a special election to slot Monte Irvin among the leftfielders (projection based on reports from 93% of precincts). Irvin played center, short, and third in the Negro Leagues and the HOM initially put him in center for purpose of these special elections by fielding position, later reallocated him to left because he didn't play much at any one of his three NeL positions and he did play LF primarily in the National League.
The top ten is no big deal at the Hall of Merit, merely the first ten of those members who are grouped by fielding position for the purpose of these special projects. Twenty-two (22) members including Irvin are grouped as "Left Fielders". Rickey Henderson will join them Sunday night.
: Hall of Merit, "2009 Ballot (Elect 3)" (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/hall_of_merit/discussion/2009_ballot/) - deadline, Sun -12-07 8:00pm
By the way, Jim O'Rourke is in center; Joe Jackson and Pete Rose are in right.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My slate of candidates for Left Fielder:
1. Stan Musial - 1941-63 - Great from 1943-58. Bat/glove/runner, did it all. Total credit to BB. Lots of records, and I don't mean Sinatra's.
2. Joe Jackson - 1911-20 - Hit .408 as rookie. Magical player. I say he's clean. Got the shaft.
3. Ted Williams - 1939-60 - Hitting deluxe. Good arm, bad attitude. Refusal to hit to LF to defeat shift cost his team countless games. Best plate discipline in game, 40's peak awesome, glove never concerned him. Ego.
4. Barry Bonds* - 1986-present. Great since 1990, Titan since 2001. Player of his generation. Convinced he's dirty, but I'm not dealing with that yet. (*Known steroid abuser.)
5. Carl Yasztrzemski - 1961-83 - No weaknesses. Peaked in late 60's. Longevity case, plus great 60's peak. Maxed out in 1967 WS.
6. Rickey Henderson - 1979-03. Now 46, holds SB, Runs records. Briefly held Walks record till Barry Bonds broke it. Little loud for my taste, not my kind of player.
7. Al Simmons - 1924-44 - Great offense, good glove. Considered best in game in 1931 by Mack, McGraw and Dan Howley. Good up to 1936.
8. Billy Williams - 1959-76 - Great 60's OF would include Billy, Rose, Oliva & Yaz. 1963-71 played consecutive game streak. Gorgeously fluid stroke was thing of beauty. Beloved longevity case at Wrigley. Took forever to reach Hall - 1987. Deserved it. Wonderful hitter, nice glove. Peaked around 1970-72. Might have injured himself.
9. Zach Wheat - 1909-27 - Ebbets Field fan darling. Sprayed line drives everywhere. Wonderful glove. Live ball really helped him reach 1923-25 hitting peak. Known for stern bat, but glove was right there too.
10. Fred Clarke - 1894-13 - Pirate Mgr. most of time. Bat/glove/ran. Longevity case.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Honorable Mentions:
11. Ralph Kiner - 1946-55 - Led league in HRs, 1946-52, great peak, HR/walks specialist. Kiner/Killebrew/R.Jackson, my poster boys as power specialists (Sluggish Sluggers club). No thanks.
12. Ed Delahanty - 1888-1903 - Great "deadball" slugger. Lots black ink. One TPR title. Some consider best slugger of 1800's. Maybe he was.
13. Albert Belle - 1989-2000 - 1995-98 sensational peak. Some considered him a "head case" with a nasty attitude reminiscent of Richie Allen. Maybe couldn't handle racism like a professional. Injury put him down prematurely.
14. Willie Stargell - 1962-82 - Pirates every day of his career. Power to burn. 1971-73 peak was up there. Pops was totally popular guy.
15. Goose Goslin - 1921-38 - Known as good hitter on good Wash. team. Led league with .379 in 1928. Glove not bad either.
16. Jimmy Sheckard - 1897-1913 - Led league once in these categories: runs, triples, HRs, on-base %, SLG. %, and twice in walks & SBs. All time glove.
17. Jim Rice - 1974-89 - Led league once in hits, triples, and twice in RBIs, SLG., & thrice in HRs. 7 all star teams.
18. Ducky Medwick - 1932-48 - Ducky Wucky was a hard-nosed, tough guy who led his league in everything in 1937. Led 6 other times outside '37. Charter member of Gashouse Wrecking Crew, with Pepper Martin, Frankie Frisch, Dean Bros., Durocher.
19. Manny Ramirez - 1993-present - Heavy bat, but whiffs too often. Still puts runs on the boards. And that's what counts.
20. Tim Raines - 1979-2002 - Set-up guy. Scored over 100 R. 7 times. Led L. in SB 4 times in row. 16 black ink says he's good. Led league in Wins shares 3 times in row. Once in TPR. '86 best yr. Longevity case produced 2605 hits with .294 career BA. 6 times over .300.
21. Duffy Lewis - 1910-21 - Famed for his glove/arm. Greatest defensive OF with Spoke/Hooper from 1910-15. Only hit .300 twice.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Missed the cut: Lou Brock, Jesse Burkett, Minnie Minoso, Bobby Veach, Lefty O'Doul, Willie Horton, Bob Meusel.
Looks like I'll be the last guy in the house to do these things non-statistically.
