Okay, let's face it. Tropicana Field is ugly as can be. It's a bit musty inside and that doddarn catwalk is always iterferring with fly balls. The Rays are also playing much better this year than they ever have. They deserve a decent ballpark, not a giant bubble.:banghead: What do you guys think about this? I think it should be torn down during next off-season(giving them time to blueprint the new field. I mean, it''s in Florida. They could build a beautiful ballpark instead of Tropicana. What do you guys think:confused:

if they tear it down next offseason, where are they gonna play when theyre building a new stadium? They can't actually tear it down until they build a new stadium and the new stadium is done.

Interestingly enough, there was a major study of this very question in the St. Pete Times last Sunday:
For the first time in their 11 years, the Tampa Bay Rays are talking playoffs. Ticket sales are up 25 percent. Television ratings are growing even faster.
So why, in the middle of this surprising surge, are the Rays seeking a new stadium?
What's wrong with Tropicana Field?
In a word: money. The Rays say only a new stadium will generate enough revenue to pay higher salaries and field a consistently competitive team.
A St. Petersburg Times review of baseball finances supports the Rays notion that modern, more intimate ballparks make huge sums of new money. Attendance, ticket prices and team value all increase, often dramatically.

Better than sitting outisde in the heat or rain. It's not my first choice for a stadium, mostly because of how far away it is from the general population, but it gets the job done. At least its not a cookie cutter with bad site lines!

They can build it next off-season and then tear tropicana down when it's ready to be played on.

sounds good.. you can pony up the 350 mil to finance a new ballpark... I am sure the city of Tampa / St. Pete would gladly welcome your check... And with this economy, it would get done in a hearbeat... (insert sarcasm here)

Well then they would wait for the funds. All i'm trying to say is that the rays need a better ballpark.

With the economy the way it is, banks failing, people filing bankruptcy, and Tampa's home foreclosure rate at one of the HIGHEST in the nation... the LAST thing they will be doing is building a new ballpark. They made improvements to the trop, and the Rays will have to play there awhile longer. Look how long it took the Twins to get a new park with a GOOD economy.... yeah its great to say OH BUILD a new arena or park.. but the taxpayers have to pay for it.. and WHY SHOULD THEY? If a team wants a new park, let the TEAM pay for it...

I'm not saying it's a need. I'm just saying that the way the Rays are playing, and if they can keep it up for a couple more years, that they deserve a better ballpark. I mean, look at the nationals. They weren't far from horrible this season, yet, they got a beautiful ballpark. That's all I'm trying to say.

If you're not much into asthetics, the only major problem with the Trop is its location--St. Petersburg is a little bit outside the population center of Tampa Bay and a ballpark in Tampa would make more sense. But breaking the lease with the Trop and Pinellas County is much easier said than done.
Other than location, it's not horrible. It's modern, about the right size for the area, and has sufficient luxury seating (although the team will always argue there should be more). And for a fixed dome, at least it was built for baseball first. It's probably the best "fixed" dome we've had in baseball, but that's not saying a whole lot.

Well that has nothing to do with anything but horrendous Baseball decisions

Good Baseball decisions. Unlike the Pirates, Reds, and Orioles.

Good Baseball decisions.Well, that one time, they did finish as high as NEXT to last
<Unlike the Orioles.>
Up until this year, which team was looking up at which?
The Pirates did finish second one year (and the Reds haven't had much time in their new digs)
