As we know the Mariners have an intern GM in Lee Pelekoudas and an intern Manager in Jim Riggleman. Usually a new GM will want one of his guys under him as a new Manager. Someone he knows and trusts and shares the same philosophy. Chances are then that Jim Riggleman will not be back as Manager. The players could not get along under previous manager Johnny McLaren, who they all liked and they can't get along now under Riggleman, whom they put up with.

Johnny McLaren went 25-47 (.350) in 2008 and 68-88 overall in the remainder of 2007 and the first part of 2008, which included the biggest slide in Major League Baseball History for a team that far above (.500).

Jim Riggleman has gone 32-40 as interm Manager in 2008. He was thrown in there suddenly and I think he's done a good job. I like the moves he makes. It's obvious who is in charge with Riggleman at the helm and you know he's in the game. It's obvious that Riggleman will not be back in 2009. The only way he's back is if Lee Pelekoudas remains as GM, which is a long shot. The question is:

Does Jim Riggleman deserve a shot next year as M's Manager ?

a.) Yes

b.) No

Does it matter who the next manager is with Armstrong and Lincoln still around? Like it or not, Armstrong/Lincoln and the new manager go hand in hand. Armstrong/Lincoln will hire the GM who will hire the manager. This isn't doom and gloom but reality. I root for the Mariners in spite of the presence of Lincoln/Armstrong. That being said if Riggleman is retained, which doesn't seem likely, I wouldn't mind. He's much better than McLaren, although his left/right match ups are pretty predictable, especially when he benches a young lefty hitting player who needs AB for right handed hitting 34/35year old journeymen. You wouldn't want a left handed hitter to ever face a LHP, that was sarcasm.

It's really hard to tell with the bizarre situation he was thrown but I would say it would be interesting to see how he would fare with a clean slate and something actually to play for. Certainly, his moves and decisions have been proactive and he's not been afraid to take chances especially with the younger guys. I like his style and I wouldn't mind seeing him again in 2009.

They are here and they will be here next year and the year after. If it's such doom and gloom, why follow the M's ? Why read about them ? Why write about them ? If chicken little walked out to the mound at Safeco Field and announced that the sky was falling, why watch another game ?

IF you want to bash Armstrong and Liincoln, go to their bash thread.

I don't really mind Riggleman most of the time. I wish he'd get out and argue with the umps and back his players a little more often though. He doesn't have to pull a Lou everytime, but at least get out there and show some life every once in a while.

--I think Riggleman is the best manager we've had since Pinella. Not that beating out the motley crew who have presided over those miserable years is agreat achievment. The new GM should be able to pick his own guy though. Pelekoudos and Riggleman should both be fired immediatley at the end of the season.

With this end-of-the-season road skid, I am changing my mind. This is very not cool. I don't want Riggleman back now.
