Wrigley Field is going to be the frozen confines on New Year's Day 2009 when the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings meet the Chicago Blackhawks outdoors in the home park of the Chicago Cubs. The matchup will be the 701st meeting between the Red Wings and Blackhawks — no two NHL opponents have played more regular-season games against one another than the two fierce rivals.

It will mark the third regular-season outdoor game in NHL history. The Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 22, 2003.

It will be the NHL's second Winter Classic. Jan. 1 in Buffalo, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 before a crowd of 71,217. Snow fell during the game.Wrigley Field is the second-oldest baseball park in the major leagues behind Boston's Fenway Park. Wrigley Field opened in 1914. The park hosted two Sting concerts during the All-Star break of 2007 and patches of the outfield grass were torn and roughed up. The game could also be competing with college football bowl games for viewers.

I was wondering if anybody has:
Information on how to purchase tickets
Has any intention of going

I am looking to go, however, I don't know how to get tickets or when they will available for purchase. I don't want to miss the day that the tickets are released and then not be able to go because the tickets were soldout within 30 minutes. So if anybody has any info that could help me, please share. Or if you guys just want to talk about this topic. I'm psyched about it. This is going to be really cool.
Thanks

I know. Tickets are probably going to be expensive, but, then again, this will probably be the first and last hockey game at the Friendly Confines.

you never know. Wrigley Field will never be torn down either. Chicago will make it stay forever.

Well let's just say the next hockey game at Wrigley after 2009 will not be for a while.

I wouldn't really like that too much. I think it is unique how they change it every single year because it is always a surprise when they come out with where the next game will be held and who will be playing. I'd like one at Rockafeller Center. That'd be cool.

yeah your right it wouldnt be that cool if it was like that. also the rockafeller center would be cool.

The NHL hit the jackpot last year in Buffalo. The snow was swirling, the wind was blowing, and there were 70,000 people there. It will be hard to duplicate that. In addition, the people in Buffalo are absolutely fanatical about the Sabres.

i am sure they already got this solved but what will they do for a scoreboard.

They will probably make one just for the game and have a sponsor or two finance it.

The scoreboard at Wrigley has a small video board at the bottom that can be used for basic game information.

I don't think that will be enough.

They are going to erect a temporary video board in LF in front of the house with the Bud ad on the roof.

That sounds more logical.

I still say they made a huge mistake by playing this game at Wrigley Field.

Every single problem that they will have by hosting the game at Wrigley (parking, sight lines, score board, traffic) would have been avoided by playing at Soldier Field and they could have sold another 20,000 tickets.

This was not thought through very well and they went with cute over common sense.

well if the Bears were in position for a home playoff game the next weekend what would they do? they cant deconstruct the entire ice rink setup in time for a football game to played 2-3 days later.

I would guess that they could.
They had to be ready for the same type of conflict in Buffalo so there is no reason why this would be any different.

Except that Buffalo had turf while Soldier Field has grass. It's a ton easier to lay turf back down than it is to reha grass to playing shape.

and in Buffalo they also had 2 extra days to work with if they did happen to make the playoffs, since the game was on a Tuesday. This game falls on a Thursday, which is probably cutting it too close for the NFL's liking.

Last year in Buffalo, everyone knew that the Bills were not going to make the playoffs so it was a moot point. The Bears are legitimate playoff contenders this year if they can find an offense!

Given that the Blackhawks are the Florida Marlins of the NHL maybe they thought they couldn't have sold another 20,000 tickets.

The Bills were in contention late in the season and the year-to-year nature of the NFL you can't be certain anyone won't be in it. Soldier Field would have been perfect since both football and hockey have rectangular playing surfaces. They would ahve sold more seats since even people who aren't Hawks or Wings fans would go. Buffalo had fans from many teams there. Chicago has enough transplants from around the country, heck they have enough hockey fans in Chicago to support a second NHL team.

There are parallels.

They're both franchises that have been run into the ground due to epic mismanagement.

Don't the minor league Wolves pull in almost as many punters as the Blackhawks?

Just saw this on yahoo sports- NHL page...you gotta feel bad for the fans in the centerfield bleachers since they're so far away from the action. Can't wait to see it though...just hope its snowing
