Hooks Wiltse went 139-90 in a 12 year baseball career. Posting an ERA of 2.47, he won 15 games four times and 20 games twice. Not only was he a solid starting pitcher, he was also a top closer (although this stat wasn't official then), appearing on the top ten list in saves 10 times. He was also a solid hitter, with a .210 batting average.

He never really led the league in much, except for K/9IP in 1904.

Statistically, he is similar to one Hall of Famer: Dizzy Dean.

So, should Hooks Wiltse be in the Hall of Fame?

I don't think he could match up to Hooks Dauss, never mind Dizzy Dean. Decent ERA's in the dead-ball era in a short career.

George Leroy "Hooks" Wiltse, was a fine hurler,

His career ERA+ was 113, comparable to a few HOFers, great control as shown by a career BB+ of 137, and despite being quite the closer, he even completed more games than his peers, with a lifetime CG+ of 101.

Outstanding, very good, all-star type pitcher, with a cool nickname.

However, the HOF, already somewhat diluted, really does not need any more very good pitchers, and would be fine without his addtion.

No, I can't go for Wiltse. A good hurler but his career is too short and bolstered by pitching for a very good team.
