"TORONTO -- The Red Sox will send reliever David Aardsma to the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain on Sunday. Right-hander David Pauley will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in the corresponding roster move.
Aardsma was placed on the DL last month with the same injury before returning on Aug. 8. Since coming back, though, he has struggled, allowing eight runs over 3 2/3 innings.
Aardsma had not appeared in a game since Wednesday, so his upcoming DL stint will be retroactive to Thursday. The right-hander will head to Boston, where he will undergo an MRI exam on Monday.
Aardsma will be joined in Boston by shortstop Julio Lugo, who is also scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday. Lugo, who has been sidelined since July 12 with a strained left quadriceps, recently suffered a setback in his attempt to come back from the injury.
"It's disappointing when you have a setback like that," Lugo said. "We'll see what's going on before we start pushing it again. It's not worse, it's just not getting better."
