--apologies to Fergie Jenkins and his great W-L record, but he was the luckiest pitcher in the league rather than the best. When Hands was healthy, Jenkins was the third best pitcher on his own staff.

I'm a bit surprised to see everyone voting for Killebrew ahead of my Willie McCovey. Killebrew beat Mac by one point in OBP, 15 points in slugging, and had six more runs created - and Mac beat out Killebrew for RC/27 outs (twice as many hit into DP for Killer). However, did anyone check the park factors for each player's home field? Killebrew enjoyed playing at Fenway Park, where the factors for a right handed batter (as DM sees it) are 107 for singles, 125 for doubles, 100 for triples and 114 for homers. Meanwhile, Mac played at Shea, where the park factors for a lefty hitter are 95 for singles, 97 for doubles, 100 for triples and 103 for homeruns. So Killer's home park favored him quite a bit, while Mac's hurt him. I certainly don't want anyone to change their vote, but I would ask those who are yet to vote to weigh this factor in, and when you see Willie at the top of my ballot please don't call it a "homer vote".

MVP

1. Willie McCovey – Taking home park into consideration, he beats out both Harmon and Rico, who enjoyed the Green Monster and Fenway for 84 home games.
2. Harmon Killebrew – A huge season. Actually thought about putting Rico here.
3. Rico Petrocelli – A monster offensive season from a shortstop who fielded very well, too.
4. Rusty Staub – This slot could have gone to several, but Staub gets credit for leading the expansion Thunder to a divisional title – and also for playing at Oakland Coliseum, a death bowl for left handed hitters.
5. Sal Bando – Great offensive season, and was actually hurt by playing at Tiger Stadium except for his homers. Defense a bit shaky, though.
6. Tony Oliva – Helped lead the Cloverleafs to their first playoff spot ever, and wasn’t done any favors by Dodger Stadium.
7. Hank Aaron – Not as huge an offensive season as Willie, but still huge with 42HR, 150 RBI and 140 runs.
8. Reggie Jackson – Great season helped the Redbirds keep pressure on the Knights until late in the season.
9. Frank Howard – Nearly got the Joes into the post season. Stats hurt quite a bit by playing half his games in a pitcher’s park.
10. Pete Rose – Would have been more impressive if he played infield still, and he was helped from both sides by playing at KC Municipal. Barely edges out Stargell for the final spot.

ROY

1. Gary Gentry – Huge season by a rookie pitcher to lead the Gamblers to their first division title ever.
2. Ken Tatum – Flip a coin between Ken and Gentry. Both were crucial to the Gamblers success this season. Gentry only gets the #1 slot because he has over twice the innings.
3. Manny Sanguillen – Very fine season by the first year backstop.

Cy Young

1. Tom Seaver – Same argument as with Mac, but in reverse. He did it in a park that favored pitchers slightly; McLain had a park that hugely favored him.
2. Denny McLain – Edges out Gentry, but I thought about putting Gentry here.
3. Gary Gentry – Had a great season in a home park that definitely favors hitters.

I also give my apologies to Fergie Jenkins. But having the most run support per game of any pitcher had to help him a lot.

MVP

1) Petrocelli - That kind of production from a short stop deserves to be rewarded.
2) McCovey - Best player on the best team in baseball.
3) Staub - His numbers are hidden by his home park, but he was a real driving force behind the expansion Thunder's surge into the playoffs. Magnificient on base numbers.
4) Killebrew - Great numbers.
5) Wynn - Great offense, plus speed and solid defense at center.
6) Oliva - Led the Cloverleafs into the playoffs.
7) Bando - Great season from a third baseman.
8) Jackson - Another leader on a winning team.
9) Howard - Almost led the Joes into the playoffs.
10) Rose - Great season for an expansion team.

I remember how much I wanted Epstein and Gentry... I had Epstein at #6 on my draft board in 1966 and he got taken one spot before me in the second round, then Gentry at #1 this year and I stupidly traded away my first-round pick.

--After reviewing the vote totals and updating the MVP thread I kind of wish I'd put Petrocelli on the top of my ballot. Nine years into the league and we've elected onlt outfielders and firstbasemen as our MVP's. Had I put Petrocelli first the extra 3 points for him and 3 less for Killebrew would have given the award to Rico. Instead he joins Dick McAuliffe (1966) and Bill Freehan (1968) as runners up from the defensive positions.

Good point but the owner of that team had Killebrew one and Rico second so that is good enough for me.

I feel kind of bad that my one vote cost McLain a unanimous election, but I still think Seaver had a better season when you take home field into consideration. Too late to change it now anyway. And I wish I had put Rico ahead of Harmon as well - although I did mention in my comments that I considered it, for whatever that's worth:thumbsdown:. Anyway, congratulations to all of our winners. I was a bit surprised that Gentry wasn't unanimous - I expected him to be, if anyone was.
