......anyone here notice how they cut patterns into the grass at Yankee Stadium (and other stadiums). However, at ATT park in SF -- where I live -- they do not do that. I think the grass at ATT looks so much cooler than the "checker board" affect. Anyone feel similarly? Or, don't care?

My personal preferance:
Growing up in New York, going to Yankee Stadium, I prefer seeing some sort of design than seeing nothing. I love the Yankee Stadium design. They better keep it that way at the new stadium.

I prefer simple grass.
the checkerboard look is too complex and circus like to me.

Those aren't any pattern(s) in the grass @ Shea, guys?!! They are the marks left from the spaceship landed there

I agree - the plain grass looks so much better than anything with patterns cut into it. Those always remind me of these:

'Where you live' started the whole pattern in the grass thing, when they were doing it ages ago at Candlestick Park.

They used this pattern? I don't remember that.

It's obviously a Photoshop (notice the kid on the RF scoreboard), so is the grass real in this one?

I imagine that was to de-uglyfy the mess of football markings scrambled up with the baseball markings.

I like the cross hatching or some such classic design to the plain mowing.

IMO patterned grass always looks better. Even with the zillion ridiculous designs the Mets come up with from time to time patterns are better. San Frans just looks plain boring and blah. Thei field really looks lifeless.

I know this is probably sacreligious for me to say being a Yankee fan, but I really like what they did in Fenway with the sock logo in the infield at times... this is the best photo I could find of it..

I think they did that there because they didn't want to put emphasis on the grass.. if you are high enough up to see the design, they wanted to emphasize the amazing view they have behind the field... even so, I think a basic design would look better and still wouldn't take the focus from that view

I like simple designs for everyday games but a unique desing for special events is cool as well.
I think I saw a pic once of the Manhattan skyline cut into grass at Shea.
That was cool.

I am hoping to go to a Mets game at either Shea Stadium or Citi Field in 2008 or 2009 and see an image of the head of Mister Met (he is the mascot of the Mets) carved into the field grass.

I thought Dave Mellor started all of this in Milwaukee before he became the Red Sox Grounds keeper?
Any way he has written a couple of books on this. If you really have a lot of time on your hands and the lawn, you can create those designs at your own house. :)

Give me a basic checkerboard pattern over AT&T's non pattern. However, the Fenway and Shea patterns are consistently over the top. Their groundskeepers must have low self esteem.

I agree with you. I am definitely not a fan of the patterns cut into the grass. It's stupid.

Its actually more difficult to do the Giants' "non-pattern" than a simple one like at Yankee Stadium.
Here's a link with an answer on how its done:
http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/question612.htm
I like the simple patterns best. I find the Giants' boring and the strange complex patterns the Mets have used distracting. They do look great in pictures, but tend to get old after a while when watching a game.
This is my favorite picture on my site:

they better do that design at citi field....that is the best design cut into grass i have seen. the only thing is, she is symetrical while citi is assymetrical....will it look good with the assymetrical fence at citi?

Extremely cool.
Shows the artistry and creativity of the groundskeepers.
Their field is their canvas, with which they obviously take great pride.
Besides, grass should not be cut the same way all the time. It creats a "nap" in the lawn, and grooves in the soil underneath.

I like simple patterns, such a checkerboards. I really don't like groundskeepers going over the top, except for extremely special occassions, or perhaps with the exception of the Sox in the infield at Fenway.

At first I liked some of the more subtle designs but in time they've become played out. Now, I'd prefer a more classical field, without the overdone designs.

Wow that's some really neat stuff there, but i think it would become too distracting. Once in a while it's cool, but for the most part i'd prefer the classic look.

Sooooooo very played out. I like the first picture of AT&T with no patterns at all.
It's baseball. It's grass. Keep it literal please.

Let's go with the truly classic look. Worn spots at the edge of the OF grass, a worn path (not specially cut) from plate to mound. Ragged edges around the plate.
Take a look at old pictures. They weren't all neatly trimmed.

then we should also use the mitts from the 20s. the catchers gear that was thinner than some uniforms. Hell while were at it lets use spit balls and tree trunks as bats. That post makes no sense. It's someone's job to get the field ready. If they want to go above and beyond the modern 'standard' then bravo to them. People played and worked hard to get out of the minors to get away from crappy fields. don't punish the players/fans by the groundskeepers doing the minimal just to get a game in.

http://www.amazon.com/Picture-Perfect-Mowing-Techniques-Landscapes/dp/1575041510I had a neighbor who used to mow a diagonal checkerboard into his lawn. (Like the Cincy infield above.) Only problem was, he didn't actually mow over the entire lawn, leaving the check pattern as 8 inch tall grass.

The above photos are GORGEOUS.
You, sir are no mere "groundskeeper." You are an ARTIST.
I respect you elevating what was merely a JOB, into a PASSION. Looks great.
But I don't think that I have EVER seen a diamond before with no basepaths between home plate and first/third base.
What's up with that?
