I'd like to know what time St. Louis Browns and St. Louis Cardinals games began at Sportsman's Park through out the years. Were the 2 teams ever scheduled to play on the same day at Sportsman's Park?
Thanks!:cap:

Very generally speaking, afternoon games would start around 3. When the Browns were home, the Cardinals were away and vice-versa (except for the spring series of course :)).

The spring series being a city series, right? Was it a yearly tradition?
Thanks for the information!:)

Both teams were scheduled to play at Sportsmans Park in October 1944.

The 1944 World Series was the reason. The St. Louis Browns first and only one in St. Louis didn't go so well against the Cardinals.

Oh Good Lord.
You mean to tell me the Cards have played in the World Series?
Oh, that's right, I've been to 4 of them, and had tickets for game 5 of a fifth WS that was never played... 7 WS games total for me. My old man has been to 7 of them, 14 games, and my Grandfather was AT the 44 Series. I suppose you should not be expected to know all that... but come on! Nearly 2,000 posts, a decent prescence on this board, and a big prescence on the Cards board.

I knew that the '44 Series was played in St. Louis. It was the only all-St. Louis series. I was just saying why they were scheduled at the same time in 1944 from your last post.
Get off my back! I know more than you think.

Yep, posting that in two posts in a row lets us know you are aware indeed.......
Your assertion that you were informing me that the only reason both teams were scheduled to play at the same park in 44 was due the WS was great. But I'm supposed to get off YOUR back? You know more than I think you do? In what post did I say anything to suggest anything to the contrary?
I'm wearing my 44 Browns Home hat as I type this..... :)

What I meant was is that I knew about the World Series. You know more about Browns history than I do, but I know a lot of other baseball facts besides World Series.

When Bill Veeck owned the Browns, the story goes that he answered his office phone one day, and a fan asked him what time that nights' game started. Veeck replied "what time can you get here?''

My bold above... maybe I don't, who knows. I thought it clear that my original post, that both teams were scheduled to play at the same time in OCTOBER 1944 was pretty clear, a reference to the WS of that year. How many games were really played in October then? Darn near the WS only, I think.
No enemies indeed!!! :highfive:

Okay then, truce.:) You did make it clear; I was just saying that for those people here the might not know that. But everyone here seems to know a lot, so maybe I was wrong for saying that. It was nothing against you or anyone else.

classic veeck...!!!:)
thanks ol' a&p for gettin this thread back on track...
i wonder what was the cut-off time for the early game when it ran long in extra innings or rain delay IF there was two games scheduled...?
at least 95% of the time if not more...one team was away while the other was home...
but i'm sure a few days were shared by outside circumstances...?

That is what I was orignally referring to when I asked if they were ever scheduled to be at Sportsman's Park on the same day. Well, its over now, so let's move on.
I would assume that with any MLB double-header that ran to extra innings would be played through. The second game would most likely be called early because of darkness. If the first game ran too long, the second game would probably be played the next time the team came to town, or the next day. This scenario would most likely apply to rain delays/rain outs. Of course lights would have allowed the game to continue well after dark for what ever reason(s).

Dave, where did you get this information? It's great; just what I've been looking for. It is interesting to see how some of the games were scheduled. If you have any more you could give me, either post it here or please send me a message.
Thanks!

To Dave:
There were occasional two day series back then.
Infrequent 2 -game, Fri-Sat. series, and the slightly more common two-game, Sat.-Sun series, such as the season-ending ones that determined the 1949 A.L. pennant between Boston and the Yankees, and the 1950 N.L pennant race between the Phillies and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
I thought the 8:30 PM weeknight starting times for the Browns were a little unusual. That means they were starting at 9:30 PM in the Eastern Time Zone. A lot of East Coast newspapers probably didn't get the Browns' games stories, final scores, or box scores, as the games lasted past their deadlines.

This is great information. I thought the Houston Colts games in '62 were well-timed too. See attachment. A good mix of the new and the old philosophies of game times. I like how Sunday games start later in Bible Belt Houston.
And it is nice to see some doubleheaders actually scheduled. :sigh: Love those twi-nighters especially. It was always exciting growing up as a kid when there was a twi-nighter.

These short series were common in the post-war era. When I was researching the 1948 and 1954 Indians, I was surprised to see how many weekends the Indians would play one team on Friday and Saturday and then another team would come in for a Sunsday doubleheader. There would also be blocks where a team might have as many as four days off in a row late in the season. This was especially common in the New York Giants schedule (football at the Polo Grounds?).
I'm playing a simulation using the 1957 schedule and there a lot of two game series. There were also quite a few one game series in the National League involving New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphi and Boston.

Hi,
Can anyone help me with home game times for the Indians in 1908. The ballpark would be League Park.
Thanks,
David
