i just cant belive how nice the outfield view is....noother stadium has that great of a view with the bridges and the whole downtown.
i can only imagine what the mets and yankees ballparks would look like if they had the view of manhattan in the background that close with all the bridges....but then of corase the stadium would have to be in NJ or westchester county ( i think)

Imagine if Steinbrenner bought the WTC site, and built NYS there, how unbeilevable the view would be. If I had unlimited money, I would do that.

I like the park, but if it didn't have such a nice view of the skyline, it would be a pretty boring looking stadium. Its kind of like the Orioles. Without that big warehouse in right field, it would look really boring.

Unbelievable view, certainly, but I don't think any New Yorker would be able to watch a baseball game there. Plus, it's prime real estate, and it's being used to house 4 towers worth of highly valuable offices, plus the WTC Memorial that absolutely needs to be there.
I had a friend once that said they should build a stadium around Battery Park or Battery Park City. I don't think it's quite feasible, but that would be a spectacular view.
There's a giant vacant lot on 59th and West End Ave., right along the Henry Hudson Parkway and the Hudson River, and right south of the new Trump Place (it's a few blocks west of Lincoln Center) that might have been able to fit a stadium, and would have had one of the best views in the majors if it were pointed slightly southeast. I'm surprised the Steinbrenners didn't look into that when they were trying to build a West Side Stadium. Would've needed a subway expansion of some kind, though.
(Though I'm very glad the Yanks stayed in the Bronx.)

Pretty ironic, since that's immediately south of where the baseball Giants wanted to build their new stadium in the mid-1950s.

PNC Park was built around that view of the skyline and the river though, just like Camden Yards was built around that warehouse (in fact, that warehouse is the main reason for the retro movement beginning - if not for that already existing design element, Camden Yards would have likely been a "modern" ballpark similar to U.S. Cellular. But the reason both of those stadiums were designed the way they were was to highlight those already-existing features.

Richmond Ballpark on Staten Island has a great view:
I couldn't find a better picture, but believe me, at night it really is something to see. It's funny, I've always wanted to see them put a ballpark on Governors Island. I mean, look at this: You would get a view that rivals PNC (My second favorite ballpark). They'll never do that though, since the part of the island with the view has the fort and all the other historical sites. still, I'd love to see it happen.

PNC puts every fan close to the field. That's the No. 1 feature I'm looking for as a customer. When I go to the game, I'm looking at the game. Everything else is a distant second. Maybe that makes me weird.

I went to PNC park last year with my friend. Seeing the ballpark was a great experience.
I think parking was five dollars across the bridge. Food was cheap $2 for a hot dog. I know the pirates fans havent had a winning team for over 15 years but they are very friendly and baseball savoy people.
I am going to start my pics with statues of Willie, Honus and Roberto.
Then random shots of the ballpark.
Finally we ask the ticket agent to give us tickets field level and she told us $26 a ticket.
My jaw dropped because $26 at shea would get me to the upper deck.
My only regret was that we didnt get to see much of the city of pittsburgh.
Enjoy

Actually, the view probably wouldn't be that great as you are so close to the buildings surrounding it. Plus you have the subway system running right next to it screeching its brakes, and not to mention it being hallowed ground. Like someone said, it'd need to be in Jersey or further out to get the views of the skyline.

Don't get me wrong it is a great place to watch a game. I think the small bleachers in left are somewhat weak and the huge green wall beyond centerfield doesn't fit in well. The concourses are smallish too.
I think though, on the whole, that most people simply like the view.

Fair enough, but they built the ballpark that way because of the location. It wouldn't be built that way if it was in the middle of a parking lot.

How do you figure? The seats are tremendously intimate i/r/t the field, the right field scoreboard is gorgeous, the food is great, there aren't any major obstructions, it's close to the city, the backstop is iconic and instantly recognizable, the dimensions aren't too, too idiotic, and it's properly scaled to the size of the club.

I caught my first foul ball there. It is standing in a ball cube on my bookshelf next to the bed. :) I didn't even know I caught it either. It was a HARD line drive, I had my mitt and reached about 3 people over and snagged it out of mid-air, somehow. I caught it in the sweet spot, and it was hit so hard that I didn't really even feel it hit the mitt. When I opened it, I was SHOCKED to see the ball inside of it! Some lady leaned over and said I had saved her life. Earlier that night, a lady was hit in the face during BP.

What they mean is the cityscape is what makes the park so nice. If you put the park in a different area (no water, no bridge, no skyline) it's not as beautiful.
PNC was designed for that location. It would not have been designed like that if was going to be built around a parking lot.
However, the seating is very intimate and is a good model for smaller town clubs. The only parks that you can just pick up and drop somewhere else are the ones that do not incorporate their surroundings.

Yes, but a 2 deck stadium in the middle of a parking lot, ala Citi Field, wouldn't be great, in my opinion.

I got my only foul ball at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. It was a high pop (first base side), I just instinctively got under it and tried to cradle it (think Willie Mays) I have to admit I dropped it... but thank god no one else was around. I probably got booed but, I don't remember... I got my ball.
Anyway, PNC is a nice ballpark... but I think that the view gets it the raves.

During my recent visit, I was actually forced to get Standing Room Only due to the O.A.R. Concert and Fireworks show after the game. Called for the 7th largest crowd in PNC history. But point being, with STO my friends and I were able to wander the park watching the game from all different angles. Best happened to be the pedestrian ramp in left field and the upper deck on the third base side.

Agreed, Sean. The team that plays there is enormously flawed. But the ballpark itself is pretty much flawless. My only complaint would be the narrowness of the concourses.
