Yeah, it goes all they way around thats a LED screen! So was the scroll that they used during the ceremonies!
MetsfanGA

i think it's a projection screen because when you look at during the day you don't see the LED boards
TinoM24
08-09-2008, 12:57 PM
yeah i definitely think it was projection. you can best tell when they did the cauldron lighting and they showed it up close. but the one on the floor is an LCD (or LED) screen, and its the biggest in the world. i think they said it was over 200 feet wide by around 70 feet high.

I don't understand. What are they going to do with all these empty stadiums after the Wold Cup?
Use them for other sporting events, obviously. Most of the stadiums are multipurpose and, as such, can be used for sports other than soccer, like track and field.
Several, Ellis Park among them, are famous rugby stadiums. Rugby is huge in South Africa. They take part in what is called the Tri-Nations competition, a yearly rugby series that is played by the top 3 rugby-playing nations in the Southern Hemisphere: S. Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Those stadiums can be adapted for soccer use, thus a cost saving to the South Africans. Only three of the stadiums will be primarily built for soccer, in areas where there is not a suitable facility within those communities. One will be the massive rebuild of Soccer City, that will overtake the capacity of Wembley and Berlin Olympic Stadium, about the same capacity as the Rose Bowl and will be a few thousand seats below Estadio Azteca.
The new stadium in Durban will be used in case that city wins the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, which they are trying to win the right to host them.
So after the World Cup, most of those stadiums will go back to hosting rugby and track and field competitions. Soccer City will be the main stadium for S. African men's soccer. Plus they have a decent soccer league, even though not near the level of European leagues.

Hm... still sounds like the majority will be empty on a regular basis. What a massive amount of money to spend on stadiums!

" My old man said be a 'Yankee' fan
And don't dilly dally on the way".
We took "Fenway" in half a minute,
We took 'Shea' and all that's in it
With hatchets and hammers, Stanley knifes and spanners
we'll show the ******** how to fight
If you can't beat a 'Redsock' then your'e not a 'Yankee' fan
ALL TOGETHER NOW! "...........
"Hail Hail, the 'Yanks' are here,
What the hell do we care,
What the hell do we care,
Hail Hail, the 'Yanks" are here,
What the hell do we care now
For it's a grand old team to play for,
For it's a grand old team to see,
And if you know your history,
Its enough to make your heart,
GO-OH-OH-OH!"......
(Of course I just used my team could really be any team :) )

It was good to see those shots... I'm a huge soccer fan, and have been to the World Cup, the greatest sporting event on earth, and that includes the Olympics.
The porblem with the SA World Cup wil not be the stadia, clearly, but rather how to get TO them, or from stadium to stadium, city to city, etc.

I was about to chastise the OP for putting a thread about soccer stadiums on a baseball website.
But then I changed my mind, seeing that it still beats the 10 millionth post on the "Bathrooms of New Yankee Stadium vs. Citi Field: Which has more toilet pressure?".
And FWIW, The Birds Nest is cool. Bizzare as hell and nothing I would ever want to see used in a baseball ballpark, but still cool.

Doesn't it depend on how many Yankee blowhards are in the restroom talking at that moment in time?

Agreed 100%. The Ballparks, STADIUMS and GD formum has HUNDREDS of threads, is there a rule that you have to read ALL of them? I'm ignoring the Citi Field Construction thread. It just does not interest me. If someone is not interested in these stadia, then don't read or post. It's that simple.
You will also not find me in the Citi Field Thread posting how the photos are not good enough, or pointing out flaws in the park, its surroundings, etc.

A couple of days late, but yes the "Bird's Nest" in Beijing is awesome. I can't wait until Track & Field starts this weekend. In the meantime, the "Cube" for the swimming is spectacular also. I'm into the Swimming and Track. Everything else is secondary.
That's the one thing historically about the Olympics. Each one has to be an architectural marvel or something breaking the mold (aka Retractable Roof at Montreal in 1976 - never mind that it wasn't finished before the games or 10 years after the games) that each country tries to outdo the previous one.
To the poster wondering about what the stadiums usage would be after, many countries that host Olympics and/or World Cups upgrade existing facilities to world class level in addition to building new ones. As far as I'm concerned, the 2012 Olympics in 4 years should be being played in my hometown (NYC) on the west side of Manhattan in the future remodeled home of the J-E-T-S. Instead Cablevision, etc. helped ruined it for everbody.

@ Urbanshocker13: From research, the Durban stadium is being designed by a German firm (Gerkan, Marg and Partners). So I don't see any clear connection to the Rays' design.
@ MetsfanGA: I found the pictures through several sites in S. Africa dealing with the World Cup but can also be found at Skyscrapercity.

Yes. There is a campaign to win the right to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Durban. Recently, it was announced that that city will be the host city for the selection ceremony to announce the winning bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics. It is considered a major boost for the pro-Durban campaign.
