Here's a good article about the career of Mickey Vernon from the August, 2001 issue of Baseball Digest.

Great article Steve! Thanks for posting the link.

In the article it quotes Mickey as saying that one of his biggest disappointmnets in baseball was being fired as manager of the expansion Senators in 1963.

It was Mickey's misfortune to be saddled with one of the most inept expansion franchises ever assembled.

I've stated before that if it hadn't been for the 1962 Mets woeful performance during their inaugural season (40-120) in the media capital of the world, the 1963 Senators, who finished 56-106, would probably be remembered as one of the most awful compilations of baseball "talent" to ever take the field masquerading as a major league team.

To get back to the topic of the article, Vernon was a great player who was never given the recognition he deserved primarily because he was stuck playing for so many "bad" teams. It's unfortunate that so few players and fans are left that remember him during his glory days.

I just checked my mail and had several autographs from Mr. Vernon. I had sent him some cards last week and requested his auto and I got them back today. I agree that he is a very underrated ball player. Seven-time All-Star and batting title winner in 1946 and 1953.
