The Ultimate Quest for Candidates (http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=68815)has now revealed to all the next players that shold be elected to the Hall. For the next Veterans Committee election, in 2009, this is the pecking order:
1 - Ron Santo
2 - Dick Allen
3 - Minnie Minoso
4 - Bobby Grich
5 - Joe Torre
These five ranked among the top 20 candidates for the Hall among all eligible MLB players. Just outside the top 20 we named Gil Hodges as a strong candidate. Bill Freehan is another to whom we gave good support that is eligible for the 2009 BBWAA election. Ted Simmons will not be eligible until the VC election of 2011.
The HOF recently split the VC; players on this ballot debuted in MLB in 1943 or later and retired in 1987 or earlier. Others we named among the top 100 candidates are Ken Boyer, Don Newcombe, Jim Kaat, Bobby Bonds, Jim Wynn, Thurman Munson, Reggie Smith, Luis Tiant, Billy Pierce, Al Rosen, Tony Oliva, Frank Howard, Norm Cash, Steve Garvey, Elston Howard and Ted Kluszewski.
The Hall of Merit (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/hall_of_merit/discussion/election_results_grich_and_santo_are_tops_for_grou p_2/) ran a survey earlier this year that answered the same question: Who are the best candidates on the 2009 VC ballot? Here are their results:
1 Bobby Grich 325
2 Ron Santo 317
3 Dick Allen 280
4 Ted Simmons 272
5 Darrell Evans 195
6 Joe Torre 183
7 Minnie Minoso 159
8 Bill Freehan 147
9 Billy Pierce 133
10 Jimmy Wynn 119
11 Graig Nettles 113
12 Ken Boyer 97
Simmons, Evans and Nettles are not eligible until 2011. Reggie Smith is another receiving very strong support for them currently. Luis Tiant and Ken Singleton are also receiving solid support.
