First in shoes, first in booze and last in the American League?

Who coined that phrase? I just recently read that and never heard that before. Similar, obviously, to Washington's "First in war, first in peace and last in the American League" moniker. I didn't think it would stick with the Cardinals in town.

i don't know the one individual st. louis sports reporter...but i take it collectively the st. louis news sports reporters did...

st. louis had numerous shoe factories...we all know about the beer...and of course love those brownies...

any one know for sure...?
