184 AB's and your OPS+ is -1.....wow.
He has more K's than total bases.

That's what I was thinking.

I know that he's a middle infielder, but when your *COMBINED* BA, OBP, OPS = .527, I think that it's time to hang 'em up. A .375 OPS is nothing to brag about.
So how come we have no picture of him? Oh yeah, here it is:

He's not helping himself out. Only 5 walks, and two were intentional

Pena is a good kid but he just doesn't get it. He can't hit a lick but has never seen a pitch that he wouldn't swing at. He has little power but takes a swing that rivals any slugger in the game. And his bunting skills are embarrassing.

Let's see if he can pull a reverse-Ankiel.
You have to wonder just how he forced 2 IBB's this season out of pitchers. Just how cautious do you have to be to pitch around the worst hitter in the league?

The home plate ump had something against the pitcher.

I know it doesn't work like this, but...
I never understand how guys who are such poor hitters are so unable to resist attempting to hit the ball.
<itching in the on deck circle> I just want wait to get out there and show these people how badly I suck, first pitch, I don't care where it is - these people are gonna see me suck or my name isn't (Tony Pena Jr., Rafael Santana, etc.)</itching in the on deck circle>
Has anybody ever finished a full season with an OPS+ under zero?
(??!??!?!?)

Bill Bergen had an OPS+ of -4 in 84 games in 1911. I believe he was injured that year.
He certainly has a chance at ending the season in minus numbers or if he's lucky single digits. His BA is so far below the mendoza line he may well establish a new line of hitting incompetence.
Bergen's record lows for BA and OBP of .139 and .163 respectively (able to qualify for batting title) is within Pena's sights as well, currently hitting around .150 and .174.

Each time he was intentionally walked, it was to load the bases.

Holy cow, that kid's got some stuff! Pitching as close to "cold" as a major leaguer gets, Pena musters a 91 MPH fastball and a 75 MPH curve??! I'm not the best judge of breaking stuff but as the inning went on that curve kept breaking later and later, and it had Soria-like separation. Nice movement too on that heater.
Approach was good too. He fooled two hitters with that curve after going inside-outside with the fastball to the first hitter. That's very good technique and actually pretty impressive.
This I'd like to see again, if only to find out whether it was a mirage or not!
An indy-baller who could do that with any kind of consistency would get a look. Maybe he should work out in the offseason to become an IF-P. If he can pinch run, pitch in relief and play decent shortstop this kid just might have a future working for an outside-the-box manager whether he can hit or not.

so will the mendoza line be obliterated with the t.p. jr line from now on...?:)
and will he be the only player ever in the history with a negative ops and an era of 0.00...?

I'm guessing it was interleague play with the pitcher up next.
Glad he doesnt play at Shea though. He might try to take a hack at one of those planes going by.

An airplane in the sky? Could he even hit an oceanliner if he were at the pier?
He could challenge former SS Rey Ordoņez' record for offensive ineptitude at Shea if he goes there. Hopefully, he'll save himself the embarassment.

One more reason why pitchers shouldn't bat: they can't! :D

Pena went on a tear in August hitting .400 to raise his season BA to .169. OPS+ is now 5. He still has more strikeouts (49) than total bases (47)
His numbers adjusted to be per 162 games are:
- 23 RBI
- 37 runs scored (not bad)
- 8 extra-base hits, 1 HR (that's pretty bad)
- 10 walks
- 3 intentional walks (wtf??!?!??!?)

Seriously. Who intenionally walked tony pena jr? Nick Markakis' OBP was higher than Pena's OPS.

I wonder how he manage to get walk intentionally three times as well.
2008 regular season close, Pena manage not to finish the season with a OPS+ in the negative numbers.

I'd still try him on the mound. Guy threw friggin' 90 MPH with no practice, worked inside-outside effectively, and that was a half-decent little curve. It might have just been a fluke but Pena's bat is so bad that he's a lot more likely to be useful to a big league team as a pitcher. JMHO.
If he could work that velocity up to 93 or so, not inconcievable under the circumstances, he could probably make a roster as a reliever.
