If you look at the pennant race graph for the 2006 NL West, you will realize just how crazy it is. The Padres and Dodgers tied for 1st with 88-74 records, with the Giants in 3rd with a 76-85 record, and the Diamondbacks and Rockies in last with 76-86 records. But if you look at the graph you will see how crazy it is. Every team was in last AND first within a matter of weeks. The Padres were in last with an 8-15 record in late April, then in first with a 20-16 record in mid-May. The Dodgers were in last on July 30th, and then in first 11 days later. The Giants were in on July 22nd, and then in last 10 days later. The Rockies first on May 21st, and then last on June 5th. The Diamondbacks 34-22 on June 4th (the most games over .500 in the division for most of the season) and still in first on June 14th, yet were in last 8 days later. My question to you is, do you think this is the craziest division race ever? If not, list other crazy division races here.

As for the 2006 NL West being the "craziest", I'm not sure. The 1973 NL East was very similar. The Mets won it with an 82-79 record (.509). Only 3.5 game separated the top four teams, only 5 games separated the top five teams.
1973 Final Standings

The 1994 AL West was horrible, if it wasn't for the strike, it probably would have been the biggest embarasment in MLB history (until 2002).
Team Games W L GB WP
Texas Rangers 114 52 62 0 0.456
Oakland Athletics 114 51 63 1 0.447
Seattle Mariners 112 49 63 2 0.438
California Angels 115 47 68 5.5 0.409
as for the 2006 NL West, I will say it was crazy.

The way the 2008 NL West is heading it will only be the results of the Intra-Division games that will see any team over .500, and the way they are going there is no guarantee that any of the teams are guaranteed to beat any other. They are certainly, at this stage of the season, no real match for teams in other divisions. Whichever team makes the playoffs from the NLW will only be there to make up the numbers. So this may well prove to be the craziest divison ever when the fat lady sings. It certainly gives credence to the concept of the Wild Card as it currently stands.
All I can do for the Dodgers is  for :hp

Its amazing just how badly the d-backs fell off a cliff after the first month. up to that point they were tearing up the NL, with Webb on his winning streak and looking sure to win their division. Now they are stuck around .500 and only have a chance of post season play because all the other teams are performing even worse.
